DIII No. 7 Nazareth Splits at Vassar Tournament
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Seventh-ranked Nazareth split a pair of men's volleyball matches Saturday during the second day of the Vassar Invitational. The Golden Flyers defeated 11th-ranked Philadelphia Biblical in three sets, then lost to third-ranked Vassar in a competitive four-set match. Nazareth completed the weekend with a 14-4 overall record.
Nazareth defeated Philadelphia Biblical by scores of 33-31, 30-28, 30-28 and then lost to Vassar 29-31, 30-28, 30-27, 36-34.
Against Vassar, freshman Billy Gimello, who represented Nazareth on the all-tournament team, combined 19 kills with 11 digs and seniors Ryan Johnsen and Kelvin Rolle each had 12 kills, but the Golden Flyers had a six-match winning streak snapped by the Brewers, who received 69 assists from setter John Kessnich and used a .347 hitting percentage to their advantage.
For Nazareth, junior Brian Bunch had nine kills and eight digs and senior setter Frank Leahy had 62 assists with five digs and four blocks.
Against Philadelphia Biblical, Gimello produced 11 kills and Bunch had 10. Rolle and fellow senior Joe Petzoldt added eight and nine kills respectively and Leahy had 41 assists and seven digs.
