No. 15 Ohio State Sweeps No. 14 Loyola-Chicago

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The 15th-ranked Ohio State (7-6 overall, 4-0 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men's volleyball team remained undefeated in the MIVA with a 3-0 (30-21, 30-27, 30-19) victory over 14th-ranked Loyola-Chicago (7-4, 0-3) Friday night in St. John Arena. Ohio State's Robbie Klein posted a match-high 18 points against the Ramblers with 17 kills and two assist blocks. John Albertson added 13.5 points with six kills and a career-high 12 total blocks (three solos and nine assists). Buckeye Ben Spurlock contributed 13 points with 13 kills. Ramblers Mike Bunting and Krisjanis Berzins each recorded 10 points in the match with Bunting collecting nine kills and two assist blocks and Berzins 10 kills.

With game one tied at three, a Shawn Sangrey kill and an Albertson solo block gave the Buckeyes a 5-3 lead. A Bunting kill cut the lead to 5-4. Two Rambler errors gave Ohio State a 7-4 lead. After an OSU error, a kill from Klein and an ace serve from Steven Kehoe made the lead four at 9-5. At 16-12 Ohio State, a Nick Lamoureux kill and a Michael Morice-Michael Hutz block cut the lead to 16-14. The Buckeyes made it 17-14 with a John Klanac kill. Two Buckeye errors cut the lead to one at 17-16. Three back-to-back kills from Spurlock and one from Sangrey opened a 21-16 Buckeye lead. Ohio State reached game point at 29-20 with a Klein kill. The Ramblers stopped the game point with a kill from Berzins at 29-21. A Loyola-Chicago error ended the game at 30-21 to give Ohio State a 1-0 lead in the match. The Buckeyes hit .353 for the game to .125 for the Ramblers.

Game two opened with kills from Matt Baleiko and Bunting and a Bunting ace serve for a 3-0 Rambler lead. A Spurlock kill and a Loyola-Chicago error made it 3-2. Three Buckeye errors and a Berzins kill expanded the Rambler lead to 7-2. Leading 14-9, kills from Berzins and Bunting made the lead seven at 16-9. OSU responded with a Ted Schoenfeldt kill and a Schoenfeldt-Albertson-Klein block to make it 16-11. A kill from Bunting made it 17-11. An Albertson kill and a Schoenfeldt-Albertson block made it 17-13 as Loyola-Chicago called time out. The Buckeye run continued with kills from Albertson, Klein and Schoenfeldt and an Albertson-Kehoe block to tie the game at 17. Tied at 19, a Rambler error gave OSU a 20-19 lead. A Berzins kill and a Buckeye error made it 21-20 Ramblers. A LUC error tied the game at 21. Tied at 23, a Klein kill, a Schoenfeldt-Albertson block and a Rambler error gave Ohio State a 26-23 lead. Berzins, with a kill, made it 26-24. An Albertson kill and a Rambler error gave the Buckeyes a 28-24 lead. Two OSU errors cut the lead to two at 28-26. Ohio State, with a Schoenfeldt kill, reached game point at 29-26. A Buckeye error stopped the point at 29-27. The Buckeyes won the game, 30-27 with a Klanac kill to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .200 for the game to .051 for Loyola-Chicago.

Two kills from Spurlock and one from Berzins opened game three to give Ohio State a 2-1 lead. Rambler kills from Steve Thompson and Bunting and an OSU error gave Loyola-Chicago a 4-2 lead. A Klein kill made it 4-3. Two Buckeye errors, a Thompson ace serve and a Rambler error made it 7-4. With Loyola-Chicago leading 8-5, two Rambler errors, a Klanac solo block and a Klein kill gave Ohio State a 9-8 lead. A Lamoureux kill and an OSU error made it 10-9 Loyola-Chicago. A Rambler error tied the game at ten. A Buckeye kill from Klein, two from Spurlock and a Rambler error gave Ohio State a 14-10 lead. An OSU error and a solo block from Thompson cut the OSU lead to 14-12. A LUC error and a Schoenfeldt solo block made it 16-12. After a Thompson kill made it 16-13, a Klein kill, a Kehoe-Albertson-Schoenfeldt block and a solo block from Kehoe made the lead six at 19-13. The Buckeyes held the lead to reach game point at 29-19 with a Klein kill. Ohio State won the game, 30-19, with an Albertson-Klein block to win the match, 3-0. The Buckeyes hit .500 in the game to -.115 for Loyola-Chicago.

For the match, Ohio State hit .333 to .022 for Loyola-Chicago. OSU had a 49-28 advantage in kills and a 46-27 margin in assists. Kehoe posted 43 assists for the Buckeyes while Hutz had 26 for the Ramblers. Loyola-Chicago had a 3-2 edge in ace serves with Rambler Thompson recording a match-high two. OSU gave up 18 service errors to 13 for the Ramblers. Defensively, Ohio State had a 29-23 advantage in digs with OSU's Mik Berzins recording a match-high eight. At the net, the Buckeyes had a 16-7 margin in team blocks. OSU's Albertson posted a match-high 12 total blocks with three solos and nine assists.

Ohio State continues at home at 7 p.m. Saturday when they face 10th-ranked Lewis (8-3, 2-1). The Flyers lost 3-1 (30-21, 30-25, 25-30, 30-22) at third ranked Penn State (13-1) Friday night.
