Florida Southern Wins Second-Annual Sunshine State Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championships
3/30/2009
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Florida Southern College won the overall team title at the second-annual Sunshine State Collegiate Beach Championships contested Saturday at the Club V Volleyball facility in Clearwater.
The Lady Mocs accumulated the most points in pool play and play-offs to earn the crown. In all, 41 teams representing nine institutions from the Sunshine State Conference competed in the all-day event promoted and supported by the coaches of the participating institutions.
Beach or sand volleyball is not yet an official, sanctioned sport by the NCAA. Representatives from NCAA Division I and Division II schools will vote next month on whether to place "sand" volleyball on the NCAA Emerging Sports list.
The second-annual Sunshine State Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championships consisted of pool play in four divisions (or pools), followed by play-offs in each division/pool. (See official results below)
"All of the student-athletes played hard and the tournament went well, even though we experienced sustained winds of 25-30 miles per hour throughout the day," Tournament Director David Carstenson said.
