No. 5 La Verne Debut With Wins Over No. 6 Trinity, Redlands

TACOMA, Wash. - The University of La Verne got off to a winning start to the 2008 campaign by securing two victories on Day 1 of the Premiere Invitational Tournament at Puget Sound in Tacoma, Wash.

In a matchup of Top 10 teams, the fifth-ranked Leopards topped NO.6 Trinity (TX) by scores of 25-23, 15-25, 25-18, 25-17. La Verne hit .217 in the contest while registering 11 service aces against the Tigers.

Junior Crista Jones paced the Leos with a match-high 18 kills en route to a .394 hitting percentage. Senior Brianna Gonzales chipped in with a double-double of 12 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore Chelsea Sleight contributed a match-high 28 digs while fellow soph Rebecca Villanueva hit .444 in the contest collecting 8 kills and 6 digs.

La Verne (2-0) met a familar foe earlier in the day when it faced SCIAC combatant University of Redlands in a non-conference matchup. La Verne held off the Bulldogs in the first two sets (27-25, 26-24) before cruising 25-16 in the third to gain a sweep. The Leopards held UR to a .096 hitting percentage in the triumph. Jones tallied a double-double of 10 kills and 13 digs while Gonzales added 8 kills.

The Leopards conclude action Saturday against two perennial West Region rivals in #12 Cal State East Bay along with tourney host and #7 Puget Sound.
