NAIA: Lindenwood Stops Park in NIT Opener

PARKVILLE, Mo. - Jared Kreienkamp had 18 kills and Mike Larson passed out 43 assists, as Lindenwood University powered past Park University in the opening match of the 2009 NAIA Men's Volleyball National Invitational Tournament at Park's Breckon Sports Center.

Park (22-8) fell despite a 12 kills from Erick Albuquerque and a 13-kill, 13-dig double-double by Fray Arteaga. Philip Heckmann had 44 assists for Park, while Lindenwood improved its record to 35-3.

The Pirates forced the Lions to scramble back in the match, winning the first set 30-24 after going up early, 7-4, on back-to-back Lindenwood errors.

Heckmann had a dump kill to make it 16-11 midway through, and Park went up 26-18 late when Joe Mponzi carded a kill from the left side to make it an eight-point game.

LU outscored Park over the final 10 serves, 6-4, but Park picked up the win with Albuquerque's kill to make it 30-24.

Lindenwood got a pair of kills from Shiroma midway through the second set to go up 15-11 and later 19-5, but Park kept it close in the second frame getting kills from Albuquerque and Uribe to cut the Lion lead to one, 21-20.

The Lions went on a 4-0 run, though, going up 25-20 and Andrew Hock tied the match for LU on the set's final play, posting a kill for a 30-26 win.

Park led early in the third set, going up 9-6 before Lindenwood came back to tie the game, and the Lions took a two-point lead a few plays later, getting a kill from Charles Spicer to go up 18-16.

Kreienkamp and Spicer finished the set for the Lions late, posting back-to-back blocks to go up 28-25 before winning the set 30-26.

Lindenwood opened the third set on a 7-2 run and quickly turned it into a 14-7 lead on blocks by Shiroma, Kreienkamp and Spicer. Kreienkamp later posted a kill to make it 19-10, and Warren finished the game with a block to win by 10, 30-20.

Lindenwood is back in action later this afternoon, taking on Hope International at 4:30 p.m., and Park returns to the court Friday morning at 10 a.m., also taking on Hope. Live stats and live video for both matches can be found by logging on to
