Buckeyes Sweep Ball State to Win the MIVA Tournament

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The 10th-ranked and top-seeded Ohio State (16-10 overall) men's volleyball team won the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Tournament with a 3-0 (30-25, 32-30, 30-19) sweep of third seeded Ball State (18-10) Saturday night in St. John Arena. The victory advances the Buckeyes to the NCAA National Semifinals, May 7, in Provo, Utah. Semifinal pairings will be announced Sunday between 1:30 and 2 p.m. on ESPNews. OSU's Robbie Klein posted a match-high 13.5 points for the Buckeyes with 10 kills, two solo blocks and three assist blocks. Ted Schoenfeldt added 12 points with 11 kills and two assist blocks and Kevin Heine posted 11.5 points with seven kills, two solo blocks and five assist blocks. Ball State's Todd Chamberlain had a team-high 12 points for the Cardinals with 11 kills and two assist blocks. Andy Nelson contributed nine points with eight kills and two assist blocks.

With game one tied at four, Ball State took a 6-4 lead off two OSU errors. A Klein kill and one from Steven Kehoe tied the game at six. A Kehoe-Heine block, a Ball State error and a Heine solo block made it 9-6 Ohio State as the Cardinals called time out. A Cardinal error, a Heine kill and a Ben Spurlock ace serve made the lead six at 12-6. Two OSU errors and a Nelson-Dominic Spadavecchio block cut the lead to 12-9. Ohio State held the lead and at 27-23, a John Klanac kill and a Cardinal error set game point at 29-23. A Buckeye error and a Nelson-Ethan Pheister block stopped two game points to make it 29-25. Ohio State ended the game with a Heine-Klein block for a 30-25 game win and a 1-0 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .241 for the game to .100 for Ball State.

Tied at four in game two, a kill from J.D. Gasparovic and an OSU error gave Ball State a 6-4 lead. At 12-10, kills from Nelson and Pheister opened a four-point lead for the Cardinals at 14-10. A Schoenfeldt kill and a Spurlock-Kehoe block made it 14-12. Trailing, 16-13, Ohio State scored the next six point to take a 19-16 lead. The run began with kills from Klanac and Schoenfeldt and solo blocks from Klein and Heine to give the Buckeyes a 17-16 lead as Ball State called time out. A Klein solo block and a Schoenfeldt kill completed the run to give the Buckeyes a 19-16 lead. Two OSU errors made it 19-18. Kills from Heine and Schoenfeldt and an OSU error made it 21-19. A Chamberlain kill and a Buckeye error tied the game at 21. Ball State took a 23-21 lead with a Nelson kill and a Buckeye error. A Schoenfeldt kill cut the lead to one at 23-22. Two OSU errors and a Pheister-Gasparovic block made it 26-22. A triple block by Gasparovic, Chamberlain and Pheister made it 27-22. Two Cardinal errors and two Kehoe-Spurlock blocks cut the Ball State lead to one at 27-26 as Ball State called time out. Kills from Gasparovic and Klein made it 28-27, BSU. A Klein-Heine block tied the game at 28. A Gasparovic kill set game point for the Cardinals at 29-28. A Klein kill stopped the game point to tie the game at 29. A Ball State error set game point for Ohio State at 30-29. Gasparovic, with a kill, stopped the game point and tied the game at 30. A Ball State error gave the Buckeyes a second game point at 31-30. A Cardinal error ended the game, at 32-30 for Ohio State, and gave the Buckeyes a 2-0 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .125 for the game to .106 for Ball State.

Ball State, with game three tied at two, had three consecutive errors to give Ohio State a 5-2 lead. At 7-4, a kill from Chamberlain made it 7-5. A Cardinal error, a Spurlock ace serve and a Klein kill opened a 10-5 Buckeye lead. Cardinal kills from Spadavecchio, Sprague and Gasparovic cut the lead to two at 10-8. Heine, with two kills, made it 12-8. A kill by Gasparovic made it 12-9. Two Cardinal errors made the Buckeye lead five at 14-9. At 15-11, a kill from Klein, a Cardinal error and a Spurlock-Klanac block forced a Ball State time out at 18-11. A Schoenfeldt kill and a BSU error expanded the lead to 20-11. Two OSU errors and a Pheister-Gasparovic-Chamberlain block offset kills from Spurlock and Schoenfeldt to make it a seven-point lead at 22-14. An OSU error made it 22-15. A Cardinal error and a Klein-Heine-Schoenfeldt block made it 24-15. An OSU error made it 24-16. Buckeye kills from Klanac and Schoenfeldt and a Cardinal error opened an 11-point lead at 27-16. An Eric Schulte kill made it 27-17. A Heine kill and a Buckeye error moved the score to 28-18. Spurlock, with a kill, set match point at 29-18. A Chamberlain kill stopped the match point at 29-19. A Cardinal error ended the game to give Ohio State a 30-19 game win and a 3-0 sweep of the match. The Buckeyes hit .367 for the game to -.057 for Ball State.

Ohio State hit .224 for the match to .054 for Ball State. The Buckeyes had a 42-38 advantage in kills and a 38-35 margin in assists. OSU's Kehoe posted a match-high 35 assists while BSU's Pheister recorded 31. Ohio State had a two-to-one edge in ace serves with Spurlock scoring both for the Buckeyes. OSU gave up 16 service errors to 15 for the Cardinals. Defensively, Ohio State had a 37-36 edge in digs. Ball State's Billy Ebel posted a match-high 14 with OSU's Schoenfeldt recording a team-high 10. At the net, the Buckeyes had a 14.5-6 advantage in team blocks. Heine posted a match-high seven total blocks for OSU with two solos and five assists.

Named to the MIVA All-Tournament team from Ball State were Ebel, Chamberlain and Nelson. Ohio State's Klanac and Schoenfeldt were named to the team as was Heine who was honored as the most valuable player.
