Ashley Engle, a senior setter for The University of Texas, has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I National Player of the Week. She earned the award after leading the second-ranked Longhorns to a perfect 3-0 record at the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Classic, which included wins over three top-20 opponents. In Texas' first match, a 3-1 triumph over then-No. 10 California, Engle dished out 32 assists and guided the Longhorn attackers to a .316 hitting percentage, while also adding 12 kills, five digs, three blocks and an ace. Engle followed that with her best outing of the weekend in a four-set victory over host, then-No. 4 Hawai'i, recording her first-career triple-double with 38 assists, 13 kills and 13 digs. The senior capped tournament play with a 27-assist, seven-kill, seven-dig outing in the Longhorns' sweep of then-No 18 Saint Louis. For the week, Engle averaged 8.82 assists, 2.91 kills, 2.27 digs and 3.36 points per set. Engle marks the fifth athlete from Texas to receive the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I National Player of the Week award, the last being Destinee Hooker on Oct. 1, 2007. The Longhorns are coached by Jerritt Elliott.
