Liz Schnelle, a junior middle blocker from then-No. 13 Ohio Northern University, has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division III National Player of the Week. She earned the award after helping the Polar Bears to five wins last week, including four wins at the St. Joseph Invitational tournament, where she earned MVP honors. After guiding her team to a sweep of Defiance to start off the week, she played her best at the tournament. In the first match, a 3-0 win over Baldwin Wallace, she hit .519 behind 15 kills, while also recording eight blocks. In Ohio Northern's next match, a 3-1 victory over then-No. 23 Mt. St. Joseph, Schnelle hit .545 on 27 kills, while getting four digs and two blocks in the win. In the Polar Bears' 3-1 win over Hanover (Ind.), Schnelle played in only three sets, yet had, arguably, her best performance, hitting at a .714 clip with 15 kills in 21 attempts and zero errors, while also totaling four digs and a block. She closed out the tournament with a .467 performance with seven kills and two blocks while playing in only two sets in the Polar Bears' 3-0 win over Asbury (Ky.). For the week, Schnelle hit at a .535 pace, while averaging 4.79 kills and one block per set. Schnelle is the sixth athlete from Ohio Northern to receive the Sports Imports/AVCA Division III National Player of the Week honor. She is also the last Polar Bear to earn the honor, receiving it on Sept. 4, 2007. Ohio Northern is coached by Kate Witte.
