Sonja Newcombe, a junior outside hitter for then-No. 11 University of Oregon, has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I National Player of the Week after helping lead her team to upset wins over two nationally-ranked opponents, then No. 5 UCLA and then-No. 4 Southern California. In the Ducks' 3-1 win over the Bruins, Newcombe scored a double-double by putting away 19 kills and scooping up 18 digs. She also chipped in one ace and six blocks in the win. It was her fourth double-double of the season, and her kill, dig and block totals were season-highs. Then in Oregon's sweep of the Women of Troy, Newcombe had six kills, seven digs and two blocks in the victory. For the week, she averaged 3.57 kills, 3.57 digs, 1.14 blocks and 4.29 points per set. This is the second time an athlete from Oregon has earned the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I National Player of the Week award. The last Duck to win the award was Gorana Maricic on Nov. 12, 2007. Oregon is coached by Jim Moore.
