Rachel Downes, a junior outside hitter for then-No. 22 Salisbury University, has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division III National Player of the Week. She earned the honor after leading the Sea Gulls to four victories last week in the St. Mary's (Md.) Seahawk Invitational. In Salisbury's first match, a 3-1 win over St. Mary's (Md.), Downes drilled 13 kills, while adding 17 digs, two assists and two blocks. Later in the evening, the junior recorded an 11-kill, 17-dig, two-block outing in the Sea Gulls' 3-1 triumph over Neumann. She followed that by earning her third double-double in two days, totaling 13 kills and 13 digs in Salisbury's sweep of Marietta. Downes ended the week with a 12-kill, seven-dig effort in a 3-0 win over Gwynedd-Mercy. With that victory, Salisbury has now won 32 consecutive matches, which marks the 10th most all-time in Division III history. For the week, Downes hit .311, while averaging 3.50 kills and 3.86 digs per set. She is the first player from Salisbury to earn Sports Imports/AVCA Division III National Player of the Week honors.  The Sea Gulls are coached by Margie Knight.
