Liz Schnelle, a junior outside hitter for then-No. 8 Ohio Northern University, has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division III National Player of the Week. She earned the award after leading her team to the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Region title with three wins, including back-to-back upsets over then-No. 5 Wittenberg and then-No. 3 Washington-St. Louis. In the Polar Bears' match against Westminster (Pa.), Schnelle had 22 kills, three digs and three total blocks in the 3-1 win. In her next match, a 3-2 upset of Wittenberg, she hit .382, putting away 26 kills in 55 attempts with five errors. She also had six digs and four total blocks in the match. She finished up the week hitting .432 with 22 kills in 37 attempts and six errors, while also getting one dig and one block in the 3-1 championship victory over Washington-St. Louis. For the week, Schnelle hit at a .333 clip, while averaging 5.38 kills per set in the Polar Bears matches. Schnelle is a two-time winner of the Sports Imports/AVCA Division III National Player of the Week award in 2008 (Sept. 30) and three-times in her career (Sept. 4, 2007). This is the eighth time an athlete from Ohio Northern has earned the award. The last Polar Bear to receive the award was Katie Weininger on Oct. 14, 2008. The Polar Bears are coached by Kate Witte.
