Kari Pestolesi, a junior outside hitter for UC Irvine, has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I National Player of the Week. She earned the award after helping lead her team to a perfect 3-0 start at the Marriott/Fairfield Invitational, which included a five-set upset of then-No. 6 California to open the season. Pestolesi drilled 17 kills and tallied 10 digs against the Bears, the Anteaters' first-ever win over a top-10 opponent, while also contributing four blocks and three assists. She followed that up with her best performance of the weekend, swatting 23 kills and grabbing 18 digs in another five-set marathon victory against Connecticut. Pestolesi ended the weekend with her third double-double in as many matches, scoring 16 kills and 21 digs in a 3-1 triumph over Nevada. For the week, Pestolesi, who took away tournament MVP honors, averaged 4.00 kills, 3.50 digs and 4.50 points per set. This is the first time an athlete from UC Irvine has received the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I National Player of the Week award. The Anteaters are coached by Paula Weishoff.
