Frank Leahy, a 6-0 setter for then-No. 4 Nazareth College, has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division III Men's National Player of the Week. He earned the award after his MVP performance in helping the Golden Flyers win the Nazareth Invitational and score back-to-back upsets against the top two teams in the country this past weekend. Leahy started out earlier in the week by leading his team to a .321 hitting percentage with 32 assists in a sweep of then-No. 10 Medaille. On the first day of the Invitational, he led his team to two more sweeps, victories against SUNY New Paltz and then-No. 12 Eastern Mennonite. Against SUNY New Paltz, he had 28 assists, four digs and five total blocks, while against Eastern Mennonite he helped his team hit at a .489 clip behind 48 assists. In the first match on day two of the tournament, he dished out 50 assists, while also picking up seven digs and two blocks against then-top-rated UC Santa Cruz. In the championship match, Leahy handed out 44 assists, leading his team to hit .405 against the No. 2 team in the nation, Springfield, to take home the tournament title. For the week, Leahy averaged 12.62 assists while helping his team hit at a .326 clip. He averaged 1.19 digs and nearly one block per game for the week as well. This is the fourth time a player from Nazareth has earned the Sports Imports/AVCA Division III Men's National Player of the Week award. The most recent winner was Tom Maving just two weeks ago on January 28, 2008. Nazareth is coached by Cal Wickens.
