Emory & Henry's Rachel Fertitta Named Sports Imports/AVCA Division III National Player of the Week
Rachel Fertitta, a sophomore middle blocker for Emory & Henry College, has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division III National Player of the Week. She earned the award after being named the MVP of the Emory & Henry Tournament, where she helped her home-standing Wasps to an undefeated record, sweeping all four opponents on the weekend. Fertitta began the tournament hot, swatting 16 kills with only one error for an impressive .682 hitting percentage, while adding five digs and a block in the win over Ferrum. She followed that up with a 13-kill, four-dig, two-block performance against Averett. In her next match, Fertitta hit for a .714 clip, tallying 11 kills, three digs and two blocks in the whitewashing of LaGrange. She capped the tournament off with, arguably, her best outing of the weekend, hitting a sizzling .867 with 13 kills and zero errors, while collecting three digs and seven blocks in the Wasps' victory over Meredith. For the week, Fertitta averaged 4.42 kills, 1.25 digs, 1.00 blocks and 5.33 points per set, while hitting a very efficient .658. This marks the first time an athlete from Emory & Henry has earned Sports Imports/AVCA Division III Player of the Week honors. The Wasps are coached by Cassie Pochyla.
