Billy Gimello, a 6-4 freshman outside hitter for then-No. 7 Nazareth College, has been named the Sports Imports Division III Men's National Player of the Week. He earned the award for his strong play last week in helping the Golden Flyers win three out of four matches against nationally-ranked opponents. In Nazareth's first match of the week against then-No. 15 Medaille, Gimello had 10 kills, two aces, six digs and five block assists in the 3-1 win. He followed that up with a 14-kill, four-dig, two solo-block and five-block assist match in a sweep of Elms. Next up, he put away 12 kills, while also scoring three aces, six digs, one solo block and two block assists in a 3-0 win over then-No. 11 Philadelphia Biblical. Arguably, he had his best performance of the week in the Golden Flyers' last match of the week, a hard-fought 3-1 loss to then-No. 3 Vassar. In the match, he scored a double-double with 19 kills and 11 digs. He also hit .417, and had one ace and two block assists. For the week, Gimello hit .345, while averaging 3.93 kills, 1.93 blocks and 5.00 points per game. This is the first time Gimello has been named Sports Imports Division III Men's National Player of the Week. He is also the fifth athlete from Nazareth to be so honored. The last Golden Flyer to garner the award was Frank Leahy on Feb. 11, 2008. Nazareth is coached by Cal Wickens.
