Ohio Northern's Liz Schnelle Named Sports Imports/AVCA Division III National Player of the Week
Liz Schnelle, a senior middle blocker for then-No. 5 Ohio Northern University, has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division III National Player of the Week. She earned this award after leading the Polar Bears to five wins, including victories over two nationally-ranked opponents, at the highly-competitive Wittenberg Border Battle. Schnelle started the week with a 20-kill, five-dig, two-ace, one-block outing in a 3-1 win over Bluffton. She then began tournament action by tallying 19 kills, four digs, three blocks and an assist in a 3-1 triumph over Alma. The two-time AVCA All-American followed that by contributing 17 kills, seven digs, three blocks and an ace in the Polar Bears' defeat of then-No.10 Calvin. In another duel of ranked-foes, she hit .593 with 18 kills, two digs and two blocks in a sweep of then-No. 8 Hope. Schnelle finished the tournament with her best performance, hitting a career-high .778 with 14 kills and no errors against Edison Community College. For the week, Schnelle, who was named to the all-tournament team, averaged 5.18 kills, 1.06 digs and 0.53 blocks per set. This is the tenth time an athlete from Ohio Northern University has received the Sports Imports/AVCA Division III National Player of the Week award and marks the fourth time Schnelle has personally received the honor, the last time coming on Nov. 18, 2008. The Polar Bears are coached by Kate Witte.
