Mary Slinger, a senior libero for top-ranked Concordia University, St. Paul, has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division II National Player of the Week after helping the Golden Bears remain perfect on the season at 21-0. Slinger, a 2008 AVCA Second-Team All-America selection, began the week with a solid defensive outing, tallying 31 digs, one ace and one assist in a 3-1 defeat of Bemidji State. The defensive sparkplug continued to wreak havoc on the opposing hitters, leading all players with 20 digs in CSP's sweep of then-No. 10 Minnesota Duluth. For the week, Slinger averaged 7.29 digs per set, which is over two digs per set above her season average, and good for the second-best mark in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC). Her weekend totals also moved her up to second-place on the Golden Bears' career dig list with 2,117 digs. This is the eighth time an athlete from Concordia St. Paul has received the Sports Imports/AVCA Division II National Player of the Week award, the last honor going to Maggie McNamara after the first week of action this season (Sept. 1). The Concordia-St. Paul is coached by Brady Starkey.
