Sports Imports/AVCA Division III National Player of the Week
Paige Johnston, a senior rightside/opposite for second-ranked Juniata College, has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division III National Player of the Week. She earned the award after leading the Eagles to four wins last week, including a four-set victory over Division II regional power California (Pa.). In Juniata's opening match of the week against the Vulcans, Johnston swatted 17 kills, good for an efficient .500 hitting percentage, while notching 10 digs and four aces. She followed with a seven-kill, six-dig outing in a sweep of Carnegie Mellon to open the Eagles' own 2009 Wid Guisler Invitational, a match in which she also recorded three aces and three blocks. In Juniata's 3-1 win over Geneva, the senior fired off 11 kills, in addition to collecting 12 digs and two aces, to tally her second double-double of the week. Johnston wrapped up tournament action by totaling eight kills, seven digs and an ace in a whitewashing of York (Pa.), hitting at a .500 clip in the process. Johnston, who earned all-tournament honors for her weekend efforts, averaged 3.31 kills and 2.69 digs while turning in a .368 attack percentage. Her honor marks the 13th time a player from Juniata has received the Sports Imports/AVCA Division III National Player of the Week award, with the last distinction going to Amber Thomas on Sept. 17, 2007. The Eagles are coached by Larry Bock.
