2008 AVCA NAIA National Player of the Year

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Dec. 15, 2008) - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) is pleased to announce Fresno Pacific University's Shu Liu as its 2008 NAIA National Player of the Year. The senior setter has now earned the honor for the second-consecutive season.

Liu guided Fresno Pacific to 32 straight victories to begin the year, and the Sunbirds, under her leadership, clinched their second-consecutive NAIA national title - the program's fourth overall - to end the campaign with a 35-1 overall record.  Liu ranked second in the NAIA and first in the Golden State Athletic Conference in assists per set, averaging 11.28 helpers per frame, while she led the Sunbirds' attack arsenal to a GSAC-best .310 team hitting percentage.  For the season, the senior also averaged 1.15 kills and 2.27 digs per set.

During her four-year stint at Fresno Pacific, Liu has made a name for herself and the program. She is a four-time first team All-American, in addition to earning all-region and all-GSAC honors a trifecta of times. After her performance in leading the Sunbirds to a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Concordia (Calif.) in the NAIA title game, which included 69 assists and 19 digs and five kills, Liu also garnered a spot on the 2008 Tachikara NAIA All-Tournament Team.

The formal presentation of the 2008 AVCA NAIA National Player of the Year will be made Dec. 19 in Omaha, Neb. at the AVCA All-America/Players of the Year Banquet. The banquet, which will take place at the Qwest Center Omaha, is held in conjunction with the 2008 AVCA Annual Convention and NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball National Championships.
