LEXINGTON, Ky. (December 16, 2008) - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) is proud to announce that Concordia University, Irvine head women's volleyball coach Paula Weishoff has been selected as the 2008 AVCA NAIA National Coach of the Year.

In 2008, Weishoff directed her squad to a 31-6 overall record, including a 15-5 mark in the highly-competitive GSAC. The Eagles began the campaign red-hot, winning their first 13 contests, and the team ended the season just as hot, advancing all the way to the NAIA National Championship match. Concordia fell in a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to defending champion Fresno Pacific, a team that accounted for three of its losses during the year, in what was the NAIA's first five-set championship match in history.

Weishoff is the winningest coach in school history, racking up 146 victories during her five-year tenure. In addition to her impressive win total and an .816 (146-31) winning percentage, Weishoff led the Eagles to the NAIA National Championships semifinals four times, including appearances in the final round in 2004 and 2008. She has coached all 10 of the program's NAIA All-American selections, and she has also mentored 16 athletes who earned nods on the All-Golden State Athletic Conference team during her reign at Concordia.

Weishoff was a three-time Olympian and graduate of the University of Southern California, where she was a member of the 1980 national championship squad. In addition Weishoff is a U.S. Volleyball Hall of Fame inductee for her accomplishments on the court. Prior to accepting the position at Concordia, Weishoff served on the coaching staff at USC for seven seasons.

The AVCA will formally present the 2008 NAIA AVCA National Coach of the Year award to Weishoff at the 2008 jostens Coaches Honors Luncheon in Omaha, Neb., on Thursday, December 18.  The luncheon is held in conjunction with the 2008 AVCA Annual Convention.
