AVCA Men's Coaches Committee Conference Call

June 18, 2002 - 1:30 p.m. ET

 

 

Present: Joe Wortmann, Doug Beal, Sean Byron, John Hutton, Ron Larsen, Joel Walton, Jenifer Scheibler

Agenda

I.          AVCA Board Meeting.

Joe provided a report on the AVCA Board Meeting held June 7-8 in Colorado Springs.

A. It was announced that interviews had been held and an Executive Director was selected.

 

B. A proposal to create a men's Division III all-America program was tabled until the December AVCA Board Meeting due to the fact that the AVCA has a policy indicating that division membership must be 75 percent for a new program to be established. The committee members suggested that a letter be sent to the athletic directors of institutions sponsoring Division III men's volleyball encouraging membership in the AVCA.

 

C. The board members were updated on men's committee discussions regarding scoring formats and Title IX issues.

 

II.         National men's coaches meeting at the 2002 Boys' Junior Olympic Championships.

A. Jenifer reported that interest was high for holding a men's meeting in conjunction with the boys' JO's scheduled for July 3-8 in Louisville, Ky.

 

B. Joe indicated he would contact USAV to secure a place and time for the meeting. Jenifer will then relay that information to the AVCA-member coaches.

 

C. Suggested discussion topics include: statistics and today's game (total points, rating liberos); scoring format, Division III and the a future NCAA championship, update on an AVCA Division III all-America program, opening for an EIVA-DIII representative on the AVCA men's committee.

           

III.        Statistics proposal by Sean Byron.

  • A. Sean shared his proposal for changes in the current box score form and asked for feedback.

 

  • B. Doug indicated he could share international forms.

 

  • C. It was noted that Bill Kauffman, AVCA Director of Communications, would be a good source to assist in determining the future direction of statistics and records for the men's game.

 

IV.        Miscellaneous.

            Doug provided an update on the men's national team.

 

The next conference call is scheduled for Wednesday, September 11 at 1:30 p.m. ET.
