AVCA Men's Coaches Committee Conference Call
Sept. 11, 2002 - 1:30 p.m. ET
Present: Joe Wortmann, Sean Byron, John Hutton, Ron Larsen, Joel Walton, Charlie Sullivan, Bill Kauffman
Not Present: Jack Coberly, Doug Beal
Joe calls the meeting to order at 1:33 p.m. ET.
I. Title IX Letter
Joe mentioned that a letter drafted by Mark Pavlik was forwarded to each men's committee member and asked for feedback. He suggested to correspond back any ideas to him so the letter can be sent as soon as possible. He asked who the letter should come from: himself or the men's committee. He believed the letter should be sent to Stephanie Schleuder as the president of the AVCA.
II. AVCA Liaison Change
Bill Kauffman is the new liaison to the men's committee as Jenifer Scheibler has moved to the Awards liaison. She is now handling the awards program as one of her primary duties at the AVCA.
III. Scoring Format Committee
The scoring format committee did not have much new to report. However, it will send a broad report to the men's committee based on feedback from the Louisville meeting. It would like to discuss proposals on the next call in October.
IV. Louisville Meeting Recap
Joe gave a recap regarding the Louisville meeting held in conjunction with JO Boys Nationals. Among the topics discussed in Louisville were the modified scoring format, alternate statistical analysis and a letter regarding Title IX.
V. Meetings at the AVCA Convention
Joe stated that the convention schedule is set and the men's meetings include a Division III meeting and a men's general session meeting. He asked for feedback regarding other meeting times needed without a response.
VI. Men's Championship Sites Selected
Joe related that the NCAA has selected the site for the next three NCAA Collegiate Men's Championships. This should help in securing the YES clinic's return to the men's volleyball championship as reasons for its exclusion was the site note selected far enough out. Joe mentioned that Jenifer is working with her NCAA contacts regarding the YES clinic.
VII. Division III All-America Program
At least 75 percent of Division III head coaches must be members of the AVCA before a Division III All-
America program will be established. Bill will send a list of Division III head coaches and schools not
currently members of the AVCA to John. The AVCA will assist in drafting a letter directed to athletic directors of non-member schools
The next conference call is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 1:30 p.m. ET.
The call adjourned at 2:10 p.m. ET.
