Long Beach State's Pestolesi and Vassar's Tully Named Sports Imports/AVCA National Players of the Week
Tommy Pestolesi, a 6-6 outside hitter for then-No. 9 Long Beach State University, has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II Men's National Player of the Week award after igniting his team to a pair of key Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) triumphs last week. In the 49ers' first match, a hard-fought 3-2 win over then-No. 11 UC Irvine, Pestolesi narrowly missed a double-double, smashing 24 kills (.488) while chipping in nine digs, one block and one ace. In LBSU's next match, a 3-0 blanking of then-No. 3 UCLA, the senior came away with 15 kills, five digs and one block on .431 hitting. For the week, Pestolesi hit an efficient .431, while averaging 4.88 kills and 1.75 digs per game. This is the first time Pestolesi has earned Sports Imports/AVCA Men's Division I-II Player of the Week accolades and marks the 20th time a LBSU athlete has taken home the award. The last 49er to earn the nod was Dean Bittner on January 25, 2010. Long Beach State is coached by Andy Read.
Phil Tully, a 6-6 senior outside hitter for then-No. 9 Vassar College has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Men's Division III National Player of the Week. He earned the award for his efforts in propelling the Brewers to a pair of North East Collegiate Volleyball Association (NEVCA) wins, allowing Vassar to remain unbeaten in conference play. Tully began the week with a 21-kill (.486), five-dig, four-block, one-ace outing in the Brewers' 3-1 triumph over Bard. The two-time AVCA Men's Division III First-Team All-American came up big again for Vassar in its four-set victory over then-No. 15 Ramapo, as the sparkplug notched a double-double with 25 kills and 13 digs. He also contributed three blocks and an assist in the match. For the week, Tully hit at a .402 clip and averaged 5.75 kills, 2.25 digs and 6.75 points per game. This marks the sixth time an athlete from Vassar has been awarded Sports Imports/AVCA Men's Division III National Player of the Week accolades and is Tully's first nod. The last Brewer to garner the honor was John Kessenich February 17, 2009. Vassar is coached by Antonia Sweet.
