Week #7 Winner
Metropolitan State College of Denver
Head Coach - Debbie Hendricks
The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) is pleased to announce the seventh Volleyball Market/AVCA Play of the Week of the 2010 season has been awarded to the Metropolitan State College of Denver volleyball team. The Roadrunners earned the honor after beating the other four semifinalists -Campbell University, Central Michigan University, Loyola Marymount University and Nixa High School- during a week-long voting period.
The award-winning play came during Metro State's away match against Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) foe Colorado State-Pueblo on October 15. The 40-second play is highlighted by the Roadrunners' outstanding save and recovery after losing control of a dig from an attack by the Thunderwolves. The rally began with a huge block from right side hitter Lisa Jones that was played out by CSU-Pueblo. CSUP's right side hitter then pounded a ball down the line that libero Ngoc Phan was able to get a piece of, sending the ball skyrocketing towards the rafters in the gym. Alex Green, who had began the play with a serve, was back behind the service line, and sent the ball back up again, but it went even further back and to the left. Phan continued to chase the ball down and sent the free ball 35 feet back to the net. The play was kept alive as her free ball hit the top of the net and rolled back towards the ThunderWolves' side. Jones and Julie Causseaux then blocked another attempt to keep the play continuing. Bri Morley dug up the next attempt and Darcy Schwartzman set Causseaux for a quick ball in the middle and Causseaux pounded it down in the middle of CSUP's side for the point. The Roadrunners went on to beat the Thunderwolves, 3-1.
The play, which can be viewed on the AVCA's YouTube channel by clicking here, will now join the other weeks' finalists in becoming eligible for the Volleyball Market/AVCA Play of the Year, to be announced at the AVCA All-America/Players of the Year Banquet on Friday, Dec. 17, at the AVCA Convention in Kansas City, Mo.
