Division I Head Coaches Committee Meeting Minutes
Wednesday, March 2, 2011
11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. (EST)
Call led by Kevin Hambly, Division I Representative, University of Illinois
1. Update on AVCA/NCAA Committee Meeting with Rob, Kathy and Kevin
Sand Volleyball Rules: Kevin noted an e-mail was sent out to coaches for comments on the sand playing rules. Kathy is also working on rules for the type of sand used on competition courts.
RPI/Pablo: A study was conducted by Dr. Paul Wenthold at Purdue University that compared three methods of using data to select teams for the NCAA tournament. The study compared the formulas used for RPI, ELO and Pablo. The results showed that Pablo is the best at determining winners with the key element being its use of point differential. The NCAA Volleyball Committee reviewed the study and is currently discussing the results. It was noted that RPI is the name given to the formula but the formula actually changes from sport-to-sport. Thus, the formula could be changed to Pablo or something similar but it could still be called RPI.
Voice in the Room/Communication: The NCAA Volleyball Committee was in agreement that it was important to have the input of coaches when making decisions. Sometimes these decisions are made within a few days so a process has been implemented to allow coaches to give feedback quickly. When issues arise that provide an opportunity for coaches to give input those issues will be sent to Kevin/AVCA who will distribute to all coaches as an "urgent" message. Coaches will be given a defined period of time for comments. Kevin noted it was very important for coaches to give feedback or decisions will be made without coaches having a voice.
NCAA Tournament: The committee has a goal of making volleyball the first equity championship to make money. The committee would like to put a greater emphasis on marketing to include access to players and human interest stories. It was noted the quick turnaround time between teams being announced and the matches taking place creates some marketing challenges. Host championship cities are doing a better job working together and are now starting to compete with each other to make things bigger and better which is good for the championship.
2. Sub-committee Updates
Marketing Sub-committee: Alma Kovaci (chair), Jamie Gordon, Robin Sparks and Kerry Major Carr currently make up this sub-committee. Alma reported their first call will be on March 8th. Their goal is to find storylines that are of interest to the public and draw more attention to the sport. Alma has researched the marketing done around some of the other NCAA championship sports and has reached out for ideas from other contacts. Alma will keep the committee updated on the progress as the calls begin this month.
It was also noted that television will fall under the marketing sub-committee.
Sand Volleyball Sub-committee: Todd Dagenais is the chair. The sub-committee has not had a meeting yet but plans to do so soon. Any coach interested in serving on this sub-committee should contact Kevin at email@example.com.
