THE COLLEGE OF SOUTHERN IDAHO'S FABIANA SPISSO de ABREU NAMED 1999 AVCA JC/CC NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Colorado Springs, Colo. - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) is pleased to announce that the College of Southern Idaho's Fabiana Spisso de Abreu, a 6-2 sophomore outside hitter/setter from Sao Paulo, Brazil, has been selected the 1999 AVCA Junior College/Community College National Player of the Year.
Abreu, the 1998 AVCA JC/CC National Player of the Year, is also a two-time AVCA First-Team All-American. During the 1999 campaign, Abreu led the No. 3 Golden Eagles to a 46-3 overall record (.939), a seventh trip to the NJCAA national championship tournament and a Region 18 Northern Division District Championship. However, Southern Idaho snapped its unprecedented national title winning streak (1993-98), as the team was toppled by Region 18 nemesis Salt Lake Community College, 3-15, 10-15, 15-13, 15-7, 15-13, in the 1999 NJCAA national semifinal match.
On the year, Abreu led the team in digs with 247 (2.02 digs per game) and was No. 2 on the squad in assists with 604 (4.95 assists per game). She tallied 419 kills (an average of 3.43 kills per game), 604 assists, 61 service aces (.50 per game), 247 digs, 13 block solos and 79 block assists for 92 total (.75 blocks per game). The team hit an impressive .383 during the 1999 season.
Abreu emerged as a team leader her freshman season (1998), winning AVCA All-America accolades and leading the Golden Eagles to their sixth straight national title. In high school, Abreu played on her state team in her native Brazil from 1990-92 and was selected to play on the national team.
The formal presentation of the award to the 1999 AVCA National Players of the Year will be made Dec. 17, 1999, in Honolulu, Hawai'i, at the AVCA All-America-Player of the Year banquet, beginning at 9 a.m. The banquet, which will take place at the Hawaiian Regent at Waikiki Beach, is held in conjunction with the 1999 AVCA National Convention and NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball National Championship.
