Division I Head Coaches Committee Meeting Minutes

Wednesday, May 4, 2011

11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. (EST)

Call led by Kevin Hambly, Division I Representative, University of Illinois

1.  University Athlete Update & Roll Call

Kevin reported that Notre Dame has submitted to the NCAA a waiver of the application of bylaw 13.14.3 to permit Division I programs to continue using University Athlete technology until December 31, 2011. The waiver is being reviewed now and a decision is expected within the next week. A roll call was conducted to determine which conferences have made contact with the NCAA to voice support of the waiver. Twenty-eight conferences have already voiced their support to the NCAA, two conferences are continuing to work on getting support and three conferences were not represented on the call.

Kevin also reported that a blanket waiver request has been submitted to the NCAA by the BCS conferences seeking a legislative change to bylaw 13.14.3 that would make the bylaw applicable only to football and basketball. If this waiver was approved the bylaw could be changed immediately as it is being presented as a non-controversial issue.

It was not clear whether the same committee reviews both waiver requests so Kathy was going to investigate further to make sure everyone was looped in. It was noted the blanket waiver likely has the best chance of passing. Kevin and the AVCA will keep coaches updated as the process moves forward.

2.  Recruiting Task Force Update

Anne Kordes reported the RTF is in the process of making educational videos of 1 -2 minutes in length that will cover topics such as recruiting calendars and things to know in the recruiting process. The RTF is making one video per month and has a 4 - 5 month schedule in place.  Anne made the first video which is posted here.

The RTF is also reviewing the possibility of expanding the recruiting dead period. The idea is to limit recruiting time to help coaches keep a better work-life balance. A survey will likely be sent out in the future to get input on recruiting calendars. Coaches are asked to share any thoughts or concerns with RTF Chair Tonya Johnson at

3.  Sub-committee Updates

Marketing Sub-committee:  Robin Sparks and Jamie Gordon reported the sub-committee is currently focusing on three primary areas in the first few months. One area of focus will be on increasing attendance at NCAA first and second round matches. It was suggested that schools which bid to host a first or second round match must include a marketing plan in their bid.

A second area of focus is to develop a handbook on how coaches can market their program and the sport. Jamie asked each member of the HCC to e-mail him ( with one or two schools in their conference he could contact to get good marketing ideas.

The final area of focus will be on promoting the NCAA Championship to the juniors market. Robin mentioned there are three big junior tournaments coming up and there is no marketing plan in place to promote the championship to the kids. The sub-committee will be working with the NCAA to reach the juniors group moving forward.

Sand Volleyball Sub-committee: Todd Dagenais (chair) reported the sand sub-committee had their first call earlier this week. The sub-committee started by defining who made up their constituency. The constituency could include schools launching a sand program this fall, schools possibly starting a sand program this fall or schools considering launching a sand program sometime in the future. In addition, the sub-committee discussed the possibility of having a season ending sand event until the NCAA adds a championship for the sport. Kathy is going to investigate the possibility of the AVCA, USA Volleyball and CBS College getting together to organize a televised year end event.

Todd is getting a list together of the schools that are planning to launch a sand program this fall. The HCC was asked to send Todd ( a list of schools in their conference who are expected to start a sand team this year.
