2010 AVCA Division I National Coach of the Year
Rich Feller - University of California
Denise Corlett - Stanford University
Kansas City, Mo. (December 16, 2010) - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) is proud to announce that University of California head women's volleyball coach Rich Feller has been selected as the 2010 AVCA Division I National Coach of the Year, while Stanford University associate head coach Denise Corlett has been named the organization's AVCA Division I National Assistant Coach of the Year.
Feller and the Golden Bears have enjoyed one of the most memorable seasons in the program's history this season. The team has found itself in the NCAA semifinals for just the second time in school history, after blowing through the tournament's opening four matches without dropping a set. With two victories at the NCAA Women's Volleyball Championship in Kansas City, the Golden Bears could hoist their first-ever national championship trophy. The veteran taskmaster has now guided the team to its ninth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament, a school record.
Feller has directed Cal to a 29-3 record thus far in 2010, with the 29 wins also setting a school record for victories in a season. In addition, this marks a program-best fifth consecutive 20-win season for Feller and Co. The success doesn't stop there, however, as the Golden Bears strung together both the second-longest winning streak and the second-best start to a season in school history.
Cal captured its first-ever Pac-10 title under Feller's guidance in 2010, netting a 15-3 league record in the highly-competitive conference. Along the way, the Golden Bears knocked off Pac-10 rival Stanford twice, marking the first time since 1979 that Cal has defeated the Cardinal twice in the same season.
During his 12 years at the helm of the program, Feller has accumulated a 241-129 record. In his 26 years as a head coach, Feller holds a 540-296 mark. He has twice been named the Pac-10 Coach of the Year, in addition to garnering AVCA Division I Pacific Region Coach of the Year honors a pair of times, as well. This marks his first AVCA Division I National Coach of the Year accolade.
Corlett, now in her 22nd season with the Cardinal, helped Stanford to another impressive campaign. The Cardinal reached the NCAA quarterfinals, where it lost a tough 3-2 decision to Pac-10 rival Southern California. Stanford, with Corlett's assistance, rattled off a 27-4 record this season and earned a share of the Pac-10 title with a 15-3 league record. In Corlett's time with the program, the Cardinal hold a 619-103 record and have captured 13 league titles and six national championships.
The AVCA formally presented both coaches their awards at the 2010 Jostens Coaches Honors Luncheon in Kansas City, Mo., on Thursday, December 16. The luncheon was held in conjunction with the 2010 AVCA Annual Convention.
