Dean Bittner, a 6-0 outside hitter for then-No. 4 Long Beach State, has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II Men's National Player of the Week. He receives the honor after helping his team win the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) regular season title with wins over then-No. 14 UC Santa Barbara and then-No. 3 Cal State Northridge. In the 49ers' 3-1 win over UCSB, Bittner put away 13 kills, while hitting .333 and scoring one ace, four digs and five blocks. The next night, he dominated the match against Cal State Northridge by hitting an incredible .645 behind 22 kills in 31 attempts and only two errors in just three games, as LBSU swept the Matadors. He also tallied two digs and two blocks in the contest. For the week, Bittner hit at an amazing .500, while averaging 5.83 kills, 1.00 digs, 1.17 blocks and 6.58 points per game. Long Beach State has now had a player awarded the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II Men's National Player of the Week 17 times in its history. The 49ers are coached by Alan Knipe.
