1996 Tachikara/AVCA JC/CC National Coach of the Year

Colorado Springs, Colo. - Tachikara and the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) are pleased to announce that Kirkwood Community College's Doug Van Oort has been selected the 1996 Tachikara/AVCA JC/CC National Coach of the Year.

Van Oort guided the Eagles, in just their first year with a volleyball program, to the Region 11 tournament championship, advancing to the NJCAA national tournament after defeating Region 13 winner Bismark State.  The team went 1-2 at the national tournament.

This year the Eagles claimed second place at the DuPage tournament and won titles at the Southwestern and Southeastern invitationals.  Kirkwood's roster featured all freshmen this season.  The squad earned its first-ever NJCAA national ranking, finishing the year at No. 14.

Tachikara will formally present the Coach of the Year awards on Thursday, Dec. 19, 1996, in Cleveland, Ohio.  The luncheon, which will begin at 12:30p.m. at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel, is held in conjunction with the 1996 AVCA National Convention.
