Chad Mercado, a 6-5 senior opposite for Lees-McRae College, has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Men's Division I-II National Player of the Week. Mercado led the Bobcats to a pair of home sweeps showing incredible offensive firepower. In the first match of the week against Eastern Mennonite, the Florida native recorded a match-high 18 kills on 21 attempts for an astounding .810 hitting percentage while adding eight digs. In the second match against NJIT, Mercado nailed another match-high 15 kills for a .481 hitting percentage. For the week, he had just three errors on 48 swings to post a combined .625 hitting percentage. Mercado has tallied at least 10 kills in all but one match this season. He entered last week ranked third in the nation in kills per set and 24th in hitting percentage. This is the second time in program history a player from Lees-McRae has won the DI-DII AVCA Player of the Week, and the first since Chris Gaskill took home the honor the week of April 10, 2006. The Bobcats are coached by James Goodridge.
