Jeff Menzel, a 6-6 senior outside hitter for UC Santa Barbara, has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Men's Division I-II National Player of the Week. The 2011 AVCA First-Team All-American led the Gauchos to the 2011 National Collegiate Men's Volleyball Championship to be played this weekend. However, it wasn't an easy path the get there. After defeating then-No. 2 BYU last week in the first round, UCSB knocked off then-No. 3 Long Beach State in the semifinals followed by No. 1 USC to win the MPSF Conference Tournament. In the MPSF Semifinal match against the 49ers, the California native nailed 23 kills and tallied seven digs in the four-set win. In the MPSF Finals, Menzel dominated the match with a season-high 28 kills on 53 attempts for a .396 hitting percentage in the five-set thriller. For his efforts, the senior was named MPSF Tournament MVP averaging 26 kills per match in the tournament. This is the 10th time a player from UC Santa Barbara has been named an AVCA Player of the Week, with this being Menzel's first. Previously, the most recent honoree was Theo Brunner, who won it the week of February 4, 2008. The Gauchos are coached by Rick McLaughlin.
