2010 AVCA NAIA National Coach of the Year
Ryan McGuyre - California Baptist University
Todd Nord - Fresno Pacific University
LEXINGTON, Ky. (December 14, 2010) - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) is proud to announce that California Baptist University head women's volleyball coach Ryan McGuyre has been selected as the 2010 AVCA NAIA National Coach of the Year, while Fresno Pacific assistant women's volleyball coach Todd Nord has been named the organization's AVCA NAIA National Assistant Coach of the Year.
McGuyre's California Baptist squad turned in another season for the record books this year. With a 33-6 overall record, the veteran mentor produced his fifth 30-win season in his tenure with the program. Already the winningest coach in program history, McGuyre captured his 300th career victory during the 2010 campaign and the Lancers also rattled off a school-record 18-match winning streak.
McGuyre directed Cal Baptist to its seventh consecutive trip to the quarterfinals of the NAIA National Tournament, where the team endured a tough five-set loss to Columbia College (Mo.). In addition, the Lancers recorded a 16-4 record in Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) action, good for their second consecutive second-place league finish. For his efforts, he earned his first GSAC Coach of the Year honor.
CBU's biggest victory of the season came on Nov. 6 when McGuyre's squad knocked off four-time defending NAIA national champion Fresno Pacific on the road, marking the Sunbirds' first home loss since 2002 - a streak of 122 matches.
In nine seasons as the women's taskmaster, he has compiled a 249-86 record and directed two national championship squads (2004, 2005). He was tabbed the NAIA All-Tournament Coach after recording the two national titles for the Lancers. Prior to coming on board with the Lancers, McGuyre also served as head coach at Biola University.
In addition to his duties as the women's coach at CBU, McGuyre also serves as the head coach of the men's volleyball program. During his nine years at the helm of the program, as he also guided five national championship squads (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2010). After his most recent NAIA Men's Volleyball National Invitational title last season, McGuyre, who holds a career record of 179-65 with the men's team, earned the inaugural AVCA NAIA Men's National Coach of the Year award. He is the only coach in the history of the AVCA National Coach of the Year program to earn the award as both a men's and women's coach.
Nord helped march Fresno Pacific to the program's fourth straight NAIA national championship in 2010, as the Sunbirds (35-2) coasted through the NAIA National Tournament without losing a set. He has been a part of five national championship squads at Fresno Pacific since coming on board as a coach, and he has been involved with FPU since he was a student-athlete in 1984.
The AVCA will formally present both coaches their awards at the 2010 Jostens Coaches Honors Luncheon in Kansas City, Mo., on Thursday, December 16. The luncheon is held in conjunction with the 2010 AVCA Annual Convention.
