Paula Ferreira - Columbia College

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Dec. 13, 2010) - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) is pleased to announce Columbia College (Mo.) setter Paula Ferreira as the 2010 AVCA NAIA National Player of the Year.

In just her sophomore season, Ferreira was a vital cog in Columbia's 42-3 overall record this season and runner-up finish in the NAIA National Championship.  Despite a loss to Fresno Pacific in the national title match, the Cougars ended the season ranked fifth in the NAIA Top 25 Poll.  They had a 29-match winning streak on their way to capturing the program's 17th American Midwest Conference (AMC) title with a perfect 16-0 league record, a full four games in front of second-place Missouri Baptist.

The Brazilian native led her team in assists (1,593) and ranked seventh nationally in assists per set (11.14). Her efforts placed her sixth in Cougar history for single-season assists and third in career assists with 3,064.  Ferreira had a solid all-around game, also leading her team in hitting percentage (.410), while she was second on the squad in aces (64), third in digs (295) and fourth in total blocks (49). Her outstanding season landed her on one of the 14 spots on the First-Team of the 2010 NAIA All-America squad, while she also garnered Third-Team laurels following the 2009 season.

Additionally, Ferreira became the third player in Cougar history to win NAIA Volleyball Player of the Year honors, becoming the first athlete to do so since 1999.  Ferriera earned Player and Setter of the Year and AMC First-Team honors, while being named AVCA Midwest Region Player of the Year.  The talented setter also proved her merit off the court being named to the 2010 ESPN Academic All-District 7 College Division First-Team.

The formal presentation of the 2010 AVCA NAIA National Player of the Year will be made Dec. 17 in Kansas City, Mo., at the AVCA All-America/Players of the Year Banquet presented by Zamst, held in conjunction with the 2010 AVCA Annual Convention and NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball National Championships.
