* Denotes total number of years selected to AVCA Division II All-Region Team

2011 AVCA Division II Region Coaches of the Year

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The following coaches have been selected by their region as the 2011 AVCA Division II Regional Coach of the Year. Each of the honorees will represent their region on the 2011 AVCA National Coach of the Year ballot. The awards will be officially presented at the 2011 Jostens Coaches Honors Luncheon in San Antonio, Texas on Thursday, Dec. 15, at the 2011 American Volleyball Coaches Association Annual Convention.

AVCA Division II Atlantic Region Coach of the Year
Christy Benner, Wheeling Jesuit University
2011 Record: 33-3, 14-0 West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference

Benner is in her tenth season at the helm for the Cardinals, and after this season's undefeated conference run, her teams have now gone unbeaten in conference play seven times, claiming three straight WVIAC championships. Benner caught her fourth WVIAC Coach of the Year honor this season, which was her second consecutive and was also  the coach of six student-athletes on the All-WVIAC teams.

AVCA Division II East Region Coach of the Year

Leo Uzcategui, University of Bridgeport

2011 Record: 21-7, 10-4 East Coast Athletic Conference

In his third season as the head coach of the Bridgeport Purple Knights, Uzcategui has compiled a record of 76-19. After this season's 21-7 record, the team returned to the Division II NCAA Tournament, and will be travelling to San Bernadino for the National Quarterfinals on December 1st for the first time in school history. Coach Uzcategui has had success this season despite only returning three starters from a team that reached the Regional Final for two straight seasons. This is Uzcategui's second time receiving this honor as East Region Coach of the Year and his first since 2009.

AVCA Division II Midwest Region Coach of the Year

Chris Gravel, Hillsdale College

2011 Record: 30-2, 18-1 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference

Now in his sixteenth season at Hillsdale, Coach Gravel has amassed over 300 wins and won three straight GLIAC Conference Championships (2009, 2010, 2011). Gravel has been honored as GLIAC Coach of the Year twice in 2009 and 2010, and this season has coached Ashlee Crowder to GLIAC and Midwest Region Player of the Year. The Chargers have been ranked in every poll this season, climbing as high as seventh in October. Coach Gravel has also led his team to the Division II National Quarterfinals where Hillsdale will take on Wheeling Jesuit on December 1st. This is Gravel's second consecutive honor from the AVCA as the Midwest Region Coach of the Year (2010, 2011).

AVCA Division II South Central Region Coach of the Year

Flip Piontek, University of Central Missouri

2011 Record: 30-4, 17-1 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association

Coach Piontek's third season as the head coach of the Central Missouri Jennies has been quite successful, picking up both a 30-win season and a South Region Championship, which marks the team's second consecutive regional title. Piontek holds a 96-14 record as head coach and has won at least a share of the MIAA title in each of his three seasons. His team also had seven players named to the All-MIAA teams, the most in school history since the 1990 team had eight players honored. This is Coach Piontek's third consecutive season being named as the AVCA South Central Region Coach of the Year (2009, 2010, 2011).

AVCA Division II South Region Coach of the Year

Courtney Draper, Eckerd College

2011 Record: 27-5, 13-3 Sunshine State Conference

Coach Draper's eighth season at Eckerd has shown a resilient response to last season's 9-18 record. After going 2-14 in conference play a year ago, Eckerd posted a 13-2 record and currently sits second behind Tampa in the Sunshine Conference standings. The Tritons rode a school-record 14-match win streak this season that included a win over then-no.1 Tampa University and obtained their first AVCA Top-25 ranking since 2009. The Tritons made it to the South Regional Final before falling to Tampa. This is Draper's first time being recognized by the AVCA as South Region Coach of the Year.

AVCA Division II Southeast Region Coach of the Year

William Condon, Armstrong Atlantic State University

2011 Record: 36-3, 13-1 Peach Belt Conference

In his fourth season at Armstrong Atlantic State, Condon set both school and conference records by coaching the team to wins in their first 31 matches. The team also reached a school-high ranking of No. 15 in the AVCA Coaches Top-25 this season, and beat nationally ranked teams for the first time since 2002. Under Condon, the Pirates have reached the Division II NCAA Tournament in each of his four seasons as head coach. Armstrong also captured their fourth share of the Peach Belt Conference title in school history, their first share since the 2008 season. This honor marks Condon's first AVCA Southeast Region Coach of the Year selection.

AVCA Division II West Region Coach of the Year

Kim Cherniss, Cal State San Bernardino

2011 Record: 30-0, 22-0 California Collegiate Athletic Association

Kim Cherniss is no stranger to success. In her 21st season at the helm of Cal State San Bernardino's volleyball program, the Coyotes amassed a perfect 27-0 record in the regular season and are poised to compete for an NCAA Division II National Championship. Having hovered in the top three of the AVCA D-II Coaches Poll for the entire season, Cal State San Bernardino claimed the top spot heading into postseason play. She coached the Coyotes to their first NCAA DII Championship appearance in 2008 and has since turned her program into perennial postseason contenders. Cherniss has carried her talents as a player into her coaching career, boasting a career record of 473-180. She was recognized as the 2008 AVCA D-II Coach of the Year in 2008, and has been named AVCA DII West Region Coach of the Year in four previous seasons.

AVCA Division II Central Region Coach of the Year

Brady Starkey, Concordia-St. Paul

2011 Record: 31-2, 18-2 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference

When Concordia-St. Paul coach Brady Starkey takes his team to the Elite Eight of the 2011 NCAA DII Tournament this December, they will be seeking their fifth consecutive NCAA DII Championship. When he took over the program in 2003, success came quickly and impressively; the Golden Bears won their first NSIC conference championship and haven't relinquished the title since. Prior to becoming the head coach, Starkey spent three seasons at Concorida as an assistant, playing a crucial role in the turnaround of the program. In fact, since taking the helm, Starkey's teams have never won less than 30 games in a season. With their first title in 2007, the Golden Bears became the first NSIC team to take home the trophy. This is Starkey's fifth time receiving Region Coach of the Year honors, and he was also named National DII Coach of the Year in 2007.
