No. 7 UC Irvine Sweeps Pacific
Stockton, Calif. - UC Irvine topped Pacific, 3-0 (30-25, 30-27, 30-22) at the Spanos Center Friday.
The Anteaters improve to 15-13 overall and 11-10 in conference play, while the Tigers fall to 4-24 on the season and 1-21 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
UC Irvine had a balanced attack with Jon Steller and Cory Yoder leading the team with 16 kills each. Jordan DuFault added 12 kills while middle blockers Aaron Harrell and Kevin Wynne recorded six and four kills, respectively. On the outside, DuFault hit .478 and Yoder was .448 on the attack. Libero Brent Asuka and Steller led the Anteaters with eight digs each.
Pacific was led by Pekka Seppanen, who tallied 12 kills on the night, while Blake Gentry earned seven kills, with no errors on 12 swings to lead the team with a .583 hitting percentage.
The teams were tied at 8-8 in game one before UCI used a kill by Jordan DuFault and a Pacific attack error to take a 10-8 lead. The Anteaters would not trail again as they went on to the 30-25 victory. DuFault was a perfect 5 for 5 in kills in the first set.
In a closely contested game two, UCI scored the final three points on a pair of DuFault kills plus a kill by Steller, 30-27.
The Anteaters jumped out to a 15-10 lead in game three and rolled to the 30-22 win.
UC Irvine will travel to Stanford for the final regular season match Saturday (April 12) for a 7:00 p.m.
