2012 AVCA Division II Region Coaches of the Year

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The following coaches have been selected by their region as the 2012 AVCA Division II Regional Coach of the Year. Each of the honorees will represent their region on the 2012 AVCA National Coach of the Year ballot. The awards will be officially presented at the 2012 Jostens Coaches Honors Luncheon in Louisville, Ky. on Thursday, Dec. 13, at the 2012 American Volleyball Coaches Association Annual Convention.

AVCA Division II South Region Coach of the Year
Melissa Wolter, University of West Florida
2012 Record: 26-7, 15-1 Gulf South Conference

Now in her 10th season as the head coach of the Argonauts, Wolter has compiled a 265-137 record and the program's fifth consecutive Gulf South Conference Championship. Currently holding a No. 17 spot in the latest AVCA Coaches Poll, the Argonauts enter the NCAA Tournament as a No. 2 seed and as one of the hottest teams in the nation winning nine consecutive matches. UWF will match up with Christian Brothers University in the first round on November 29th. A four-time GSC Coach of the Year, this is her first AVCA Region Coach of the Year honor.

AVCA Division II Atlantic Region Coach of the Year

Matt Darling, Gannon University

2012 Record: 28-5, 17-2 Pennsyvania State Athletic Conference

Since taking over a then-struggling program in 2007, Darling has turned Gannon around by making them a staple in the NCAA Tournament since 2009. In 2012, they enter the tournament as the No. 2 seed in the Atlantic Regional coming off their first ever conference championship. Their 28 victories marks the most wins in a season since the 1993 squad went 28-6. Gannon is playing some of their best volleyball to date, winning 12 of its last 13 matches and 23 of its last 26. Darling is now a first-time AVCA Region Coach of the Year winner.

AVCA Division II Southeast Region Coach of the Year

Will Condon, Armstrong Atlantic State University

2012 Record: 32-5, 13-1 Peach Belt Conference

Armstrong Atlantic defeated Flagler in five sets to win their third Peach Belt Conference Tournament, and their first since 2008. For their unforgettable season, the Pirates were given their first ever No. 1 seed and will be the host of the Southeast Regional. Their current 10-match winning streak is their longest of the season after winning nine in a row to open the 2012 campaign. Condon has won AVCA Region Coach of the Year honors for the second consecutive time.

AVCA Division II Midwest Region Coach of the Year
Tim Koth, Northwood University
2012: 26-6 (17-1 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference)

In his ninth season as Northwood's head coach, Tim Koth led the Timberwolves to an overall record of 26-6 and a conference record of 17-1. Coach Koth has a record of 154-112 with the Timberwolves, and a career total of 254 wins. The Timberwolves are headed to the Midwest region tournament as the No. 2 seed and won the 2012 GLIAC post-season tournament. Sophomore Julia Packhomenko was recognized as GLIAC Player of the Year and as part of the Midwest All-Region team, and Coach Koth was honored as GLIAC Coach of the Year. This is Koth's first Midwest Region Coach of the Year award.

AVCA Division II West Region Coach of the Year
Wilfred Navalta - BYU-Hawai'i
2012: 21-3 (16-0 Pacific West Conference)

During his 27th season as head coach at Brigham Young University-Hawaii, Wifred Navalta led his team to a 21-3 season record, a .875 winning percentage. The team was ranked first in Pacific West Conference matches, with an undefeated finish of 16-0. The team is currently tied for the No. 5 ranking in the AVCA Poll and will advance to the West Region Tournament. Three BYUH players were named to the West All-Region Team, including Ying Chun Chen, Shih Ting Chen, and Lauren Hagermeyer. Navalta has won eight NAIA National Championships and two Division II Championships during his tenure at BYUH. He was honored as National Coach of the Year in 1999 and 1996. Navalta won NAIA Regional Coach of the Year awards in 1996 and 1997, and he won the Division II West Region Coach of the Year in 1998, making this his second DII Region Coach of the Year award.

AVCA Division II East Region Coach of the Year
Robin Salters - University of New Haven
2012: 27-1 (15-0 Northeast-10 Conference)

A former setter for the Chargers and a 1991 graduate of the University, Robin Salters continues to uphold the proud winning tradition of New Haven volleyball. Since taking the helm in 1994 as only the second head coach in program history, Salters has posted a 531-149 record and .780 winning percentage. This year, she led her squad to a 27-1 record, including a perfect 15-0 in Northeast-10 Conference play. Her school will host the NCAA DII East Region Championship. Since 2008, her teams are undefeated in Northeast-10 play. This is her third AVCA Region Coach of the Year recognition.

AVCA Division II Central Region Coach of the Year
Brady Starkey - Concordia-St. Paul
2012: 27-4 (18-2 NSIC)

It has been another strong showing for Brady Starkey's Golden Bear squad this season, posting a 27-4 record heading into NCAA DII Regional Tournament play. A 5-set loss to #2 ranked Southwest Minnesota State snapped a 17-match winning streak, including 16 consecutive home victories. Concordia-St. Paul began the season by winning 48 straight sets on their home floor. Heading to tournament play, Starkey will boast a career record of 333-30, posting a winning percentage of .910. Success is no stranger to Starkey, as he has won AVCA National Coach of the Year three times, as well as seven previous AVCA Region Coach of the Year awards.

AVCA Division II South Central Region Coach of the Year
Jamie Skadeland - Colorado School of Mines
2012: 25-7 (17-2 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference)

In her fifth season as the head coach at Colorado School of Mines, Skadeland has led her team to a school-best 25-6 record. For the fourth consecutive year, the Orediggers will be heading to the NCAA South Central Regional Tournament, being named a #3 seed by the selection committee. This is only the fifth NCAA Tournament berth in CSM history. Her first stint as a head coach has thus far resulted in a record of 104-50, and last season, she coached the program's first-ever AVCA All-American. She was an assistant at CSM for a season before being named as the head coach. Skadeland is a previous AVCA Thirty Under 30 Award recipient.
