2012 AVCA NAIA National Coach of the Year
Melinda Wrye-Washington - Columbia College (MO)
Jason Munoz - Oklahoma Baptist University
LEXINGTON, Ky. (December 7, 2012) -The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) is proud to announce that Columbia College (MO) head women's volleyball coach Melinda Wrye-Washington has been selected as the 2012 AVCA NAIA National Coach of the Year, while Oklahoma Baptist University assistant women's volleyball coach Jason Munoz has been tabbed as the 2012 AVCA NAIA National Assistant Coach of the Year.
In Wrye-Washington's 13th year at the helm of the Cougars, they finished the 2012 campaign with a 42-2 record, a No. 3 final poll ranking and the runner-up at the NAIA National Championship, which was their eighth semifinals appearance in school history. For her efforts, she was honored as the NAIA National Coach of the Year in addition to being named the AMC Coach of the Year. Just like her 2012 AVCA National Player of the Year Paula Ferreira, this is her second national AVCA honor after winning COY in 2004.
She coached three AVCA NAIA All-Americans in 2012: setter Paula Ferreira, outside hitter Kahoriz Feliz, libero Elena Berroteran and one honorable mention in outside hitter Brooke Simpson. Her numerous All-Americans and Players of the Year coached under her tenure has resulted in a career record of 587-80 since she took over in 2000.
It was truly a dominant year for the Cougars, rattling off 34 consecutive victories after dropping a match to then-No. 1 University of Texas at Brownsville on September 8th. Their next defeat didn't come until the NAIA National Championship Match, a span of nearly three months. Also within that streak, they only dropped a grand total of 13 sets.
Munoz, an assistant coach for OBU since 2009, helped lead the Lady Bison to a fantastic 35-6 record and a perfect 10-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. In one of the best seasons recent memory, they had two AVCA NAIA All-Americans for the first time in program history as junior outside hitter Kristin Pressley and senior setter Sabra Clark took home the honor. A 2001 graduate of Putnam City West High School, Munoz attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University, earning his master of education degree in sports management in 2007.
The AVCA will formally present both coaches their awards at the 2012 Jostens Coaches Honors Luncheon in Louisville, Kentucky, on Thursday, December 13. The luncheon is held in conjunction with the 2012 AVCA Annual Convention.
