LEXINGTON, Ky. (December 4, 2012) - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) is pleased to announce that Los Angeles Pierce College head women's volleyball coach Nabil Mardini has been selected as the 2012 Two Year College National Coach of the Year, while Cowley College assistant coach Riann Mullis has been named the AVCA Two Year College National Assistant Coach of the Year.

When it comes to Two Year College programs across the country, you'd be hard-pressed to find a more successful team and head coach than Pierce College's Nabil Mardini. Not only is he unaccustomed to losing, he may not even remember as the Brahmas have won an unprecedented 66 consecutive matches. They took home their third consecutive CCCAA title, the first time anyone has done that since Golden West won 12 in a row from 1993-2004. They have also won the Western State Conference Title an astounding 11 out of the last 12 seasons.

However, the path to their third straight championship wasn't easy. In the semifinals against Golden West, Pierce College was trailing two sets to one with a four-point deficit in the fourth set. Mardini then looked to Brittani Elser to bail them out and she did just that, nailing four consecutive aces to dig them out of their hole and save the season.

The Brahmas end the 2012 campaign with a perfect 33-0 record as they will certainly re-tool for their run to a fourth consecutive title next year. In addition to winning this year's AVCA TYC Southwest Region Coach of the Year, he garnered the honor at the beginning of their championship run in 2010.

Mullis, an assistant coach for the Cowley College Tigers, has played a vital role in the program's success over the past two years. After helping lead Cowley to their first ever championship a year ago, they finished the NJCAA Division II season with a 38-1 record as the national runner-up. Mullis oversees their players' academic progress, helps plan and run practices, prepares scouting reports, manages supplies and equipment, and works with the student-athletes in the recruiting process to four-year schools. In fact, last week sophomore opposite Martyna Gluchowicz signed to play volleyball at Florida International University.

The AVCA will formally present both coaches their awards at the 2012 Jostens Coaches Honors Luncheon in Louisville, Kentucky on Thursday, December 13th. The luncheon is held in conjunction with the 2012 AVCA Annual Convention.
