Division I Head Coaches Committee Meeting Minutes

Wednesday, November 6, 2013

11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. (EST)

Call led by Lyndsey Oates, Division I Representative, University of Northern Colorado

1.  NCAA Committee (Kristin Fasbender)

Kristin reported that the Volleyball Committee will have a call on November 7 to have a discussion of potential tournament teams. The tournament selection show will take at 9:30 p.m. ET on December 1.

As of November 6 almost 9,000 tickets have been sold to the championship in Seattle plus the NCAA is holding another 2,300 for specific groups. There are approximately 2,800 tickets remaining. All lower arena seats are sold out.

The bid deadline for potential tournament host schools is November 12. If the top 16 seeds bid to be a host school and meet the criteria then those schools will be awarded the bid.

The finalists for the 2015, 2016 and 2017 championship host sites have been announced. The final selections will be announced on December 11.

2.  NCAA Division I Restructuring (Kathy DeBoer)

Kathy attended a meeting with the Executive Directors of six other coaches associations on October 29 at NCAA headquarters. The coaches associations were part of several groups (AD's, faculty, ect) making short presentations to the NCAA Board of Directors regarding what role they might play in the NCAA restructuring of Division I. The coaches association presentation included several micro ideas including giving coaches associations the authority to sponsor legislation, have association staff or representatives serve on NCAA committees, and create a channel for the expedited handling of non-controversial sport-specific legislative details. Also, if some type of Division I Super Conference is created the idea was presented to increase the sport sponsorship minimum for the schools in the Super Conference to create more playing opportunities for student-athletes.

Further conversation will take place at the NCAA Convention in January 2014 with a new set of operating procedures in place by April 2014.

3.  NCAA Rules Update (Todd Dageneis)

Todd reported the NCAA Rules Committee met recently to review the proposals that were submitted. After the proposals are condensed a rules survey will be sent out to all coaches to solicit feedback. Todd emphasized it is very important for coaches to participate in this survey to make their voice heard. Among the rules proposals submitted most frequently were the net rule, playing the fifth set to 25, and Data Volley communication restrictions with the bench.

Todd will provide an update during the Division I General Meeting at the AVCA Convention. The Rules Committee will meet in January to discuss all proposals and feedback received.

4.  Preseason Exhibition Match (Matt Peck)

Matt solicited feedback from the committee on their interest in playing preseason exhibition matches. Currently most volleyball teams have only intra-squad scrimmages but in other sports like soccer and basketball the teams schedule exhibition matches against other schools. The consensus of the committee was they are for the opportunity to schedule preseason exhibition matches as long as those matches don't count against the 28 dates. Kathy suggested getting support from a major and mid-major conference to sponsor the legislation and then the proposal would have to go through the legislation cycle once the legislative freeze has ended.

5.  Marketing Sub-Committee Update (Jaime Gordon)

Jaime reported the opening round host school watch list was released last week. This list included 33 teams and the head coach, sports information director, and marketing staff at those schools received a packet of information prepared by the NCAA to assist them in pre-marketing the opening rounds.

Also, this week a packet of information prepared by the NCAA was sent to Kentucky, Illinois and Southern California as regional host schools to assist with ideas on pre-marketing the regional matches. Ticket sales at Nebraska are strong so they were not sent the information.

Jaime mentioned there will be a Cyber Monday Sale on December 2 where tournament tickets specials will be offered.

Coaches are encouraged to contact Jaime at if they have any issues or questions they would like the sub-committee to discuss.

6.  AVCA Update (Jason Jones)

After that date coaches will need to register onsite in Seattle beginning at 4 p.m. PT on Tuesday, December 17.
