II. AVCA Update (Emily Andrews):
a. The AVCA Spring Conference registration is open. The spring conference will be held May 1 - 3 in conjunction with the NCAA Men's Volleyball Championships in Chicago. The early registration discount rate of $239 will be available until March 21. This year there is also a Saturday Only registration package for $99. The schedule will include an exhibit show, several networking events and numerous on-court and classroom educational sessions. For more information on the spring conference schedule and registration please click here.
b. The AVCA VPI database is now available and currently has over 850 athletes. You can login to the data base by going to www.avcavpi.com and use your AVCA member login to access the database. It's searchable by grad year, position, VPI score or any metric that is tested. The VPI is a battery of tests that measures vertical jump, arm swing speed, height of attack, block jump, lateral quickness and acceleration - six physical measurements associated with success in the sport of volleyball. Along with a player's height and reach these performance metrics make up the Volleyball Performance Index. This is single aggregated number can be compared with other players the same age, players at the same position, or players currently on college teams. We have four College Prep Combines this spring and after each of the Combines, over 150 athletes will be added to the database. The database also provides a 50-70 second video clip of each athlete in their preferred position. Check it out!
c. The Minority Coaches Committee application deadline is THIS Friday for scholarships to the Spring Conference. Scholarship will include registration and hotel cost.
d. The new issue of Coaching Volleyball 2.0 will feature an article from Wellesley College coach Dorothy Webb. Coaching Volleyball 2.0 will go live this week and can be found on the AVCA Facebook page and under the Education/Resources tab on avca.org. Be sure to check out this article Defensive Systems!
III. Sand Volleyball - Kathy DeBoer, AVCA Executive Director
a. Sand volleyball is an emerging sport in DI an DII and an unregulated sport in DIII. NCAA is recommending sand volleyball to be a championship sport in DIII. AVCA is in the process of putting together a white paper for DIII to educate what the format is for the sport and what are the options for DIII sand volleyball.
b. Thoughts, feedback, concerns and advice?
a. Crossover players/rosters with indoor and sand for DIII schools.
b. Sand teams will have more rules, since there currently aren't any.
c. Will head volleyball coach also become the head sand coach? How are other schools handling this?
d. How does it work with the crossover of sand and spring season for court?
IV. Non-Traditional Season Concerns/Ideas - Monica McDonald
a. Discussion about not having competitive games in the spring season. Is there a need to compete in the spring? Think we have lost playing for the sake of playing. In favor of taking away dates in the fall to add them in the spring. They would not count to record.
i. Concern - it will lessen the season in the fall and hurt budgets.
ii. Having more flexibility in the spring to practice.
c. This will be a topic of discussion for next month's call, so if you have any other thoughts, concerns or ideas bring them to the call in April!
V. Growing the Game Committee Report?
