No. 10 Ohio State Sweeps No. 12 George Mason

Columbus, Ohio - The 10th-ranked Ohio State (14-7 overall) men's volleyball team defeated No. 12 George Mason (16-7) in a three-game sweep with scores of 30-21, 30-21, 30-27 Friday night in St. John Arena. Buckeye Robbie Klein (Sr.-Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) scored a match-high 20 points in the victory with a match-high 14 kills, two ace serves, two solo blocks and four assist blocks. Patriot Kyle Gramit had a team-high 14 points for George Mason with 11 kills, a solo block and four assist blocks.

Ohio State opened game one with the first three points coming from a Daniel Mathews (Sr., Shorewood, Wis.) kill, a Jason Tobkin (So.-Fr., Fairfield, Ohio) ace serve and a Mathews-Ben Spurlock (Sr.-So., Stow, Ohio)-Klein block. George Mason, with Mark Burik kill and a Gramit-Erik Lanham block cut the margin to one at 3-2. At 5-4, OSU, Buckeye kills from Klein and Tobkin and a Brett Versen (5th-Sr., Centerville, Ohio) solo block gave Ohio State an 8-4 lead. The Buckeyes held the lead and reached game point at 29-21 with a Ted Schoenfeldt (So., Northbrook, Ill.) kill. A George Mason error ended the game at 30-21 for Ohio State. The Buckeyes hit .216 for the game to -.056 for the Patriots.

Game two saw the Buckeyes take a 6-0 lead starting with a kill from Mathews, a Patriot error and a Spurlock ace serve for a 3-0 lead. A second kill from Mathews, a Patriot error and a solo block by Klein made it 6-0. Ohio State continued to hold the lead, reaching game point at 29-19 off a George Mason error. Patriot kills from R.J. Goubeaux and Burik cut the lead to 29-21. Ohio State closed out the game at 30-21 with a Versen kill to take a 2-0 lead in the match. The Buckeyes hit .351 for the game to .135 for George Mason.

Two George Mason errors opened game three giving OSU a 2-0 lead. Two OSU errors tied the game at two. The Patriots took a 3-2 lead off a Buckeye error. A Spurlock-Klein block tied the game at three. George Mason took a 4-3 lead with a Gramit kill. A Schoenfeldt kill tied the game at four and a Patriot error gave Ohio State a 5-4 lead. A George Mason error and a Gramit kill made it 6-5. Ohio State opened a 9-5 lead with a three-point run starting with a Schoenfeldt-Versen block. A Tobkin kill and a Klein ace serve made the lead three at 9-5. With Ohio State leading, 18-15, a Gramit kill and a Gramit-Lanham block cut the lead to one at 18-17. OSU went up 19-17 with a Versen kill. Two kills from Hudson Bates tied the game at 19. Tied at 20, kills from Klein and Versen gave OSU a 22-20 lead. A Goubeaux kill made it 22-21. A Patriot error and a Tobkin kill gave Ohio State a 24-21 lead. At 27-24, a Buckeye error cut the lead to two at 27-25. A Versen kill and a Patriot error set match point at 29-25. Two Buckeye errors cut the margin to 29-27. Ohio State closed out the game with a kill from Mathews for a 30-27 win in the game and a 3-0 sweep in the match. OSU hit .250 for the game to .242 for George Mason

Ohio State hit .273 for the match with George Mason hitting .105. The Buckeyes had a 53-32 advantage in kills and 5-0 margin in ace serves. Ohio State gave up 11 service errors to seven for the Patriots. Defensively, the Buckeyes had a 42-24 advantage in digs with Buckeyes Conor Martin (Sr., Avon Lake, Ohio) and Mathews sharing match-high honors with 10 digs each. At the net, OSU had a 12.5 to 12 edge in team blocks. OSU's Klein recorded a match-high six total blocks with two solos and four assists to equal his career high. Buckeye setter Mathews posted a match-high 42 assists with Patriot Ryan Kwiatkowski collecting 26.

Ohio State continues play at home Saturday when they host Rutgers-Newark at 7 p.m. in St. John Arena.
