UC Irvine's Jayson Jablonsky Named AVCA Division I-II Men's National Player of the YearSM

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 3, 2005) - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) is pleased to announce UC Irvine junior outside hitter Jayson Jablonsky has been selected as the 2006 AVCA Division I-II Men's National Player of the YearSM.

Jablonsky earned Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Year honors after hitting .356. He has sparked the Anteaters to their first-ever MPSF regular-season title with school-records of 27 overall victories and 20 league wins. Jablonsky averaged 4.90 points, 4.17 kills, 1.65 digs, 0.37 aces and 0.65 blocks per game. He ranks among the top 20 in NCAA Division I-II in points per game, kills per game and aces per game. Jablonsky, a two-time Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II National Player of the WeekSM as a junior, has reached double-figure kills in 27 of 30 matches this season with three double-doubles involving kills and digs. He has hit at least .400 in 13 matches in 2006.

"Jayson is the one of the best all-around volleyball players I have ever coached," UC Irvine Head Coach Men's Volleyball Coach John Speraw said. "He is good at every single skill on the volleyball court and is our best scoring weapon. He is a tremendously hard worker and is determined to be the best at his position. This award shows that he is succeeding at accomplishing his goal."

Jablonsky has 434 kills in 2006 for the ninth-best single-season total in school history. He has served 38 aces in his junior campaign for the second-best season output for an Anteater. Jablonsky has also entered the school records book for single-season attack attempts (10th with 859) and digs (13th with 172).

UC Irvine (27-4), picked to finish eighth in the 2006 MPSF Preseason Poll, has been ranked atop the CSTV/AVCA Division I-II Men's Coaches Top 15 PollSM the past eight weeks. The Anteaters, with all six starters returning from 2005, have improved by 18 matches in the win column over last season's 9-20 record. UC Irvine won 21 consecutive matches to end the regular season. The Anteaters enter their first-ever NCAA National Collegiate Men's Volleyball Championship as the top seed and will face Penn State University in the semifinals on May 4.

Jablonsky is the first Anteater to earn either MPSF Player of the Year or AVCA Men's National Player of the YearSM recognition. He ranks seventh all-time in UC Irvine history for career kills with 1,026 with one year of eligibility remaining. Jablonsky has 80 aces in his career for fourth-best in Anteater annals, along with 396-career digs for 11th place.

Formal presentation of the AVCA Division I-II Men's All-AmericaSM and National Player of the YearSM awards were made Wednesday, May 3, at the NCAA Men's Volleyball National Championship Banquet on the Penn State University campus at University Park, Pa.
