Juniata College's Ricky Ziegler Named AVCA Division III Men's National Player of the Year

Colorado Springs, Colo. - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) is pleased to announce Juniata College senior setter Ricky Ziegler as its 2005 AVCA Division III Men's National Player of the Year.

Ziegler, a 6-5 native of Manchester, Pa, averages 13.42 assists, 0.99 digs, 0.85 blocks and 0.81 kills per game. He is leading the team with 35 aces this season and has led the Eagles to the best team hitting percentage in the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) at .340. Ziegler directed top-ranked Juniata to the EIVA Division III Tournament Championship, which has allowed the Eagles a chance to defend their Molten Division III Men's Invitational Volleyball Championship title on April 15-16. He was named the EIVA Division III Tournament most valuable player after averaging 12.57 assists, 1.00 digs, 1.00 blocks, 1.43 kills, 0.43 aces and hitting .769. Ziegler recorded 10 kills on 13 errorless attempts.

"Ricky has proven himself to be among the top setters in the East, and probably the Midwest-West regardless of Division," Juniata Head Coach Ken Shibuya said. "He has maintained his play at a phenomenal level this season, and has been a huge part of our success. He really understands what we are trying to do offensively, and has worked hard to gain a better understanding of what opponents are doing to try and stop us. He has made all of his teammates better by his choices, and by the consistency of his performances, he's certainly deserving of this great honor."

He handed out his 3,000th-career assist last weekend at the EIVA Division III Tournament while helping Juniata to a .500 hitting percentage against second-ranked New York University and third-ranked Springfield. Juniata has not dropped a match this season to a NCAA Division III opponent. He dishes out 13.56 assists per game against NCAA Division I-II rivals. Ziegler is the NCAA Division III and EIVA assists per game leader with 13.51.

Ziegler has been named to the AVCA Division III Men's First Team All-America for the second consecutive season. Earlier this year he was named the Sports Imports/AVCA National Player on Feb. 28 and April 11. Ziegler is a member of the EIVA Division III All-East First Team.

A Juniata student-athlete has garnered the AVCA Division III National Player of the Year in both years the award has existed. Kenny Eiser, who led the Eagles to the Molten Championship in 2004, earned the award in the inaugural year of the award.
