LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 2, 2007) - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) is proud to announce that Carthage College Head Men's Volleyball Coach L.J. Marx has been selected as the 2007 AVCA Division III Men's National Coach of the YearSM.

In only the team's third season of varsity competition, Marx led Carthage to a 25-8 overall record this season, and a 16-2 mark against NCAA Division III schools.  Carthage earned the Midwest/West Region at-large bid into the Molten Division III Men's Invitational Volleyball Championship.  The Red Men were awarded the top seed of the Molten Invitational, and defeated fourth-seeded Stevens Institute of Technology in the semifinals.  The Red Men then fell to second-seeded Juniata College in five games in the finals.

Carthage, the Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Coleman Division regular season champion, went 12-2 this season against teams ranked in the final CSTV/AVCA Division III Men's Top 15 Coaches Poll, winning almost 77% of those games played.  The Red Men also won four matches against NCAA Division I-II opponents.

Carthage was ranked second in the final CSTV/AVCA Division III Poll, the highest final ranking in team history.  Never falling below third in the poll all season, they were ranked first for two weeks leading up to the Molten Invitational.

Under Marx's direction, Carthage placed four student-athletes on the 2007 AVCA Division III Men's All-America Teams, two on the first team, and two on the second team.  In his three years as head coach, five different Marx-led players have now been honored a total of eight times as AVCA All-Americans.

Marx is now 54-30 in his three years as head coach of Carthage. In only the fourth year that a separate AVCA Division III Men's National Coach of the Year has been awarded, Marx has now won two of those four awards, garnering the honor in 2005 as well.

Marx will be formally presented the AVCA Division III National Coach of the Year award in December in Sacramento, Calif., at the 2007 AVCA Coach of the Year and Victory Club AwardsSM banquet. The banquet is held in conjunction with the 2007 AVCA Annual Convention.
