Juniata's Kines Named AVCA Division III Player of the Year

Salem, Va. (Nov., 15, 2006) - Juniata College middle hitter Stephanie Kines was named the 2006 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III Player of the YearSM on Wednesday, November 15, 2006. The award was announced at the NCAA Division III Awards Banquet in Salem, Va., which was held in conjunction with the NCAA Division III Tournament, November 16-18.

The senior volleyball athlete is just the second Eagles volleyball player honored with the award in its 22-year history, as Carli Dale earned the honor in 2004.

"It really is an amazing honor and I feel very fortunate to have been recognized with this award," Kines said. "At the same time, it's pretty silly for me to get this prestigious individual award when anything I've accomplished is due to my incredible teammates. I'm so lucky to be a part of a wonderful team and they are the reason I'm receiving this honor."

Kines has won numerous awards during her playing career. Recently, she was named an AVCA First Team All-AmericanSM for the third time, becoming only the fifth Juniata player so honored. She also was named Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year for the second time, earned Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week one time and has earned numerous All-Region and All-Conference awards in each of her four years with the Eagles.

"Stephanie is an incredibly determined young woman, and that has been a huge factor in her success," Juniata Head Coach Larry Bock said. "She has all the technical and fundamental things, but she was willing to work and expand her game, and that has helped make her incredibly tough to stop. Stephanie is an efficient offensive player, and her blocking efforts have been absolutely clinical at times. She's an outstanding all-around player and is certainly deserving of this award."

Kines will end her Juniata career later this week as one of the top middle hitters in the Eagles' history. Coming into the NCAA Division III Tournament, she leads the team with a .429 hitting percentage, which is also good for sixth in the nation, The 5-11 middle hitter also leads the team with 99 blocks and is second on the team with 327 kills.

She's recorded 13 double-digit kill matches this season, with her best performance being a 19-kill match against Mount St. Joseph on September 29. Kines has also been a standout for the Eagles in blocking, as she's put down at least one block in all but two of Juniata's 39 matches, and has had three or more 18 times.

Juniata has played in two championship matches during Kines' career, and they are aiming to make a third appearance in the final this year.
