Abbie Brown of Central College Named 1998 AVCA Division III Player of the Year

For immediate release - Dec. 3, 1998
The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) is pleased to announce that Central College's Abbie Brown has been selected as the 1998 AVCA National Player of the Year for Division III.

Brown, a two-time AVCA First-Team All-American, has led Central (35-2) back to the NCAA tournament for the fourth consecutive year.  The Dutch will take on undefeated Wellesley College (36-0) in the first semifinal match at Juniata College's Memorial Gymnasium in Huntingdon, Pa., Dec. 4 at 5 p.m.  Defending national champion University of California San Diego (25-4) will face top-ranked Juniata (39-1) in the second semifinal at 8 p.m.

Brown has accumulated 588 kills, 278 digs and 120 blocks so far this season, registering in the top five nationally in kills with more than five per game and in the top 12 with a .400 hitting percentage.  A consistent contributor for the Dutch, she has hit at a .500 clip or better in 12 matches this year, owns school records for most kills in a match (34) and most kills in a season (588) and currently stands just 27 kills shy of the school career record with 1,145 to her credit.  A transfer from Kansas State, where she totaled 374 kills for the Wildcats in 1996, she also leads Central this year in digs with 278 and aces with 56.

Recently named Iowa Conference MVP for the second time, Brown led the conference in both kills and attack percentage as Central won its third consecutive league title and its third post-season conference tournament.  The team co-captain tallied 24 kills, 12 digs, eight blocks and a .425 hitting percentage as Central topped Nebraska Wesleyan for the Central Region championship, then posted 17 kills, seven digs and a .455 hitting percentage in a sweep of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in the NCAA quarterfinals.  A two-sport athlete, Brown also competed in the 1998 NCAA womenís basketball tournament in which Central advanced to the second round.

The junior middle blocker broke the NCAA Division III record for most kills in a three-game match with 34 in a sweep of top 10 competitor and regional rival Wartburg College on Oct. 24.  She averaged 6.1 kills, 3.5 digs and 1.06 blocks while hitting .556 and notching her 1,000th kill for the Dutch as they swept all five opponents that weekend at the Central Invitational.  Brown was named AVCA Division III National Player of the Week for her efforts.

Brown earned tournament MVP honors at the Central, Nebraska Wesleyan and UC San Diego Triton Invitationals and has been named to the all-tournament team in every tourney in which she has competed for Central.  She also received Iowa Conference Player of the Week recognition three times this year.

The formal presentation of awards to the 1998 AVCA National Players of the Year will be made Dec. 18, 1998, in Madison, Wis., at the AVCA Player of the Year/All-America brunch beginning at 9:30 a.m.  The brunch, which will take place at the Marriott Madison West, is held in conjunction with the 1998 AVCA National Convention.
