Jennifer Martz of Washington University Named 1997 AVCA Division III Player of the Year

Colorado Springs, Colo. -- The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) is pleased to announce that Washington University's Jennifer Martz has been selected as the 1997 AVCA National Player of the Year for Division III.

Martz, a three-time AVCA All-American, has led Washington (Mo.) back to the NCAA tournament, where the Bears have finished as national champions an unprecedented six consecutive years.  In a repeat of last year's championship matchup, WU will face Juniata College Friday in semifinal action at the University of California-San Diego's RIMAC Arena.

During the regular season, Martz tallied 545 kills, 113 digs, 88 blocks and 65 aces while leading the team with a .530 hitting percentage.  After helping Washington secure the University Athletic Association (UAA) title for the 10th time in 11 years, she led the Bears past Trinity University, Emory University and Wellesley College in postseason play.

Martz was recently named UAA Most Valuable Player for the second consecutive year.  The junior middle blocker was named to six all-tournament teams this season, including three tournament MVP selections, and was instrumental in leading Washington to a 35-6 record and a permanent spot among this year's top five of the AVCA Coaches Division III Top 15 Poll.

After posting 4.7 kills and a .598 hitting percentage to claim the Washington University Midwest Invitational in October, Martz was named AVCA Division III National Player of the Week.

The St. Louis, Mo., native was a member of both the 1996 and 1995 national champion teams for Washington.  The Bears have advanced to the championship match in eight of the last 10 years, claiming the national title seven times.

The formal presentation of awards to the 1997 AVCA National Players of the Year will be made Dec. 19, 1997, in Spokane, Wash., at the AVCA Player of the Year/All-America brunch beginning at 9:30 a.m.  The brunch, which will take place at the Spokane Doubletree City Center, is held in conjunction with the 1997 AVCA National Convention.
