Dayton Guides No. 15 Lewis Over DIII No. 7 Carthage
Romeoville, Ill. - Senior Jared Dayton had a match-high 16 kills and eight digs to lead the No. 15 Lewis Flyers over Carthage 3-0 (30-28, 30-20, 30-24) Wednesday evening in a non-conference match.
Junior Alex Vigansky had three blocks (one solo) to become the Flyers' rally scoring era career blocks leader with 331. His total ranks third all-time in Lewis history. Junior Billy Sahagian added nine kills. Sophomore Mike Iandolo finished with 48 assists, five block assists, two kills and an ace. Junior Nick Perakes notched ten digs, including five in game one. Senior David Kyner tied a career-high with four kills.
Game one was tied 12 times with the teams twice exchanging leads. Carthage took a 6-2 advantage before Lewis rallied to tie it at seven. The Flyers took their first lead of the game at 12-11 on a Sahagian kill. With the score tied at 21, kills by junior Drew Pickering and Iandolo gave the Flyers a two-point advantage they would never relinquish. A Pickering kill for the 30th point gave the Flyers an opening game victory.
It was all Lewis in game two, out-hitting Carthage .242 to -.065. The Flyers held leads of 12-4 and 20-9 before winning by 10 points.
Lewis fell behind Carthage by four points at 12-8 before rallying to tie it at 19 and take a 24-19 lead behind an 8-0 run. The stretch featured six straight kills by the Lewis offense, including two by junior David Kelnhofer who had seven kills, all in game three.
The Flyers out-hit. (351 to .177) and out-blocked (8.0 to 1.0) Carthage. Lewis improves to 17-7 while Carthage falls to 15-14.
The Flyers are at MSOE on Tuesday in a non-conference match.
