DIII No. 9 Ramapo Sweeps NJCU in NECVA Metro Match-Up

Mahwah, NJ - The Ramapo College mens volleyball team swept the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University tonight at the Bradley Center, 3-0 (30-20, 30-24, 30-16) to improve to 24-5 overall, 6-2 in the NECVA Metro Division. NJCU falls to 14-17 overall, 4-4 in the conference.

Ramapo hit .400 in a game one, 30-20 victory behind four kills from junior outside hitter Shane Donohue (Freehold, NJ). Senior Brendan Whitford (Lyndhurst, NJ), junior Tom Kohler (East Brunswick, NJ), and rookie Jeff Elsasser (Barnegat, NJ) each recorded three kills with no errors and junior setter Jairo Seirra (Fair Lawn, NJ) dished out 14 assists for the team. TC Elsasser (Barnegat, NJ) led the team in blocks with three total. NJCU's Chris Edra (Edison, NJ) and Kevin Rodgers (Clifton, NJ) each recorded four kills in the game one loss. The Gothic Knights hit .200 in the game with 14 kills on 35 attempts with seven errors. Ramapo combined for 16 kills on 30 attempts with four errors.

In game two, the Roadrunners recorded 23 kills on 44 attempts with eight errors hitting .341 ahead of NJCU's .214. Ramapo earned a 30-24 victory with Whitford leading the way with seven kills. Donohue and J. Elsasser recorded five kills each. Sierra dished out 20 assists and Kurt Backlund (Old Bridge, NJ) led the team's defense with four digs. Rodgers recorded a team high three kills for the Gothic Knights.

The Roadrunners swept the match with a game three, 30-16 victory. Elvis Cabrera (Clifton, NJ) and Nolan King (Cedar Run, NJ) led the team with five kills each while sophomore setter Matt Scott (Edison, NJ) contributed 15 assists for the team. Kevin McNerney (Bayonne, NJ) led the defense with four digs. The Roadrunners combined for 15 kills on 25 attempts with five errors hitting .400 while the Gothic Knights hit -.045 recording seven kills and eight errors on 22 attempts. Edra and Marley Pena-Guzman (Atlanta, GA) each recorded three kills for NJCU.

Whitford led the way with a team high ten kills and Donohue added nine to the team's 24th victory of the year. Sierra finished the night with 34 assists and Dan Sempkowski (East Brunswick, NJ) and Backlund each recorded six digs. NJCU's Edra recorded nine kills and Pena-Guzman added eight. Justin Beaumont (Bayonne, NJ) dished out a team high 25 assists in the loss.

The Roadrunners return to action on Tuesday, March 25th when they take on New Paltz at 7:00 PM at the Bradley Center.
